My car started to download a software update yesterday but it failed. Anyone know what that’s about? I already downloaded the frunk update which is the last one I was aware of.

Mine downloaded an update a couple of days ago (Thursday). I was busy and forgot to check details at the time. I'll have to check the car to see what it was about
Do these software updates come in over the Onstar link (even if you don’t subscribe to Onstar)? Or are they dependent upon the owners cellular / WiFi service?

The OTA link is part of GM's "Connected Services" that uses cellular. OnStar gives a customer access to this. No Onstar or WiFi needed to get OTA updates. I don't subscribe.
I believe you need a connected network in your C8.
I setup/use my phone's mobile HOTSPOT vs home network wifi.
This allows me to get updates no matter where I am located.

I just started mine and it showed an update was available. It downloaded as the others did and said successful and complete. It said it was for an airbag control module update or something along those lines.
NO. Completely wrong.
You need to do nothing. GM is always connected.
I've never had it work that way.
I've always done mobile hot spot and I just completed it using the hotspot.
It did not do it without the hotspot on - I've always needed a network connection.
Maybe it is a settings thing I am unfamiliar with.
Update# is GM N20-230525:0.0.0.0 Nothing found via Google
The Frunk Key Fob update is applied, but not Listed on my C8's screen.

Yes. did mine yesterday as well. I was not expecting it. I was out for a nice long drive, came to a stop, put it in park when it prompted me. Shut the car off. Took about 5 minutes.
Mine didn't pop up. I went looking for it under software update. I was in accessory - didn't start or drive the C8. Next time I'll just start my C8 and drive and then see what happens.
That might account for the difference needing the mobile hot spot or just coming in over the air - lol OTAU.
I assume that it must be using the permanent telematics connection OnStar uses, but at N/C.

One other thing to look for, when I started mine yesterday and backed it out of the garage, it popped up and said I have an update, but by the time I stopped and put it in park it had disappeared from the screen. I had to then go to updates and there it was. I selected it to download and it said the car can't be running. I didn't put it into accessory or anything else, just shut the car off. It says in the message you can leave the car while it's working. I just sat in the car and waited. the screen went dark, but I could still see what was happening it just wasn't backlit. When it was done it popped up bright and said successful and complete.
Where are you folks checking for updates? I have had my car over a month and have never seen any of the messages regarding updates you are referring to.
I did go into “Setting” on the head unit then to “vehicle” then “updates” and it says it can’t connect to WiFi. If I look at WiFi I can see the car is connect to my iPhone hotspot.
As mentioned above, if you start your car, you'll be informed if an update needs to be applied. Then follow the directions
If you go into settings to do it manually, you need to set up an internet connection via a wifi network or mobile hot spot first. Then after a connection is established, you'll get notifications like the first bullet, then follow directions. If you have a connection created/established, if there are no updates, you get the silly *** message instead of it saying there are no updates to be applied.

Well I did set up access to my iPhones hot spot and the car shows it as active, but when I click on ‘updates’ it says something about Onstar not available and to connect to a WiFi network?
UPDATE: Ok I figured it out. What I described above is what happens if the engine is running. If in accessory mode it checks and displays message “No updates available” and the date / time last checked. Would have been nice if, while the engine was running it just said that it must be in accessory mode to check rather than say there’s a network connection issue!

It checks automatically when the engine first starts over the air - hence OTAU. To do it manually yourself you have to have a connection via a wifi network you set up or a mobile hot spot you set up.
After the update yesterday I tried to start my car today (Sunday) and all it would do is crank over for about 10 seconds then backfire and then the engine would shut off. Anybody know what this my be?
