I use my phone spotify app for music in all my cars. Why would I want the app installed in my infotainment system?
Same here. I have the app in my C8, but, to my knowledge, there is not a way to add/download my playlist and list of albums from Spotify on my phone to the app in that car. And the last thing I want to do is to build new playlists on the car app.

You can login to the Spotify App with your Spotify account and all your Playlists and songs will be there.
You need the onstar data plan to load up your account right?
This was my assumption that you need a data plan to make the car app work without the phone. Since I will always have my phone, I have not bothered trying to set up the app in my car. And I don't subscribe to Onstar.
When I plug my phone into the car all of my entire Spotify Library including Playlists is there. I didn't do anything specifically. It's like Android Auto just connects and discovers it each time you plug the phone into the car.
What I do notice is that I have one playlist with 135 songs and left to it's own, it just keep playing the same 2 or 3 dozen songs but that may be Spotify as it happens in my other cars too. You can always just verbally ask the car to play songs, artists, albums, playlists etc... on Spotify...
Spotify downloads all or most songs to your phone so it consumes a lot of storage rather than OTA bandwidth...

I have the Android Auto on my phone and car, but the app fails more frequently than it used to be, it's pretty annoying when you're playing songs during the drive and it stops out of no reason. So I'd prefer downloading Spotify songs with a Spotify to MP3 converter and stream these songs offline, at least they won't pause when the connection is poor.
OT. So is it not possible to login to your Spotify App of the infotainment screen, connect to WiFi and download the playlists to an SD card and then play from it offline without the data plan...Has anyone tried it? I know you can play from your phone via CarPlay.
The problem with using the Spotify app in the car as opposed to using the app on your phone with bluetooth, is that the car app will not allow you to scroll through a play list. Also, if you have a lot of albums on your phone album list, they will not all show up on the car app.
You can download your Spotify playlists to a local file with a Spotify music converter. Then you can copy the file to a usb, so that you can plug the usb into the car and listen your favorite Spotify songs. All you need to do is download Spotify Music Unlocker, is a trusted app. I have downloaded Spotify songs with it for years.

Having Spotify in your infotainment system lets you control music directly from the car’s screen, use steering wheel controls, and sometimes stream without your phone, making it more convenient and safer while driving.
I have been using the Spotify app in the infortainment system until very recently and that was the only reason I am on the OnStart data plan. My reason is because I'm using wireless CarPlay and sound quality is just too bad. Recently the app stopped working. If I click a music/playlist or podcast, it shows blank screen and doesn't play anything. I even did factory reset but that didn't help. So now I am cancelling data plan and just bare with bad quality or do wired for long drive.
I sometimes use the car's Spotify app. It can be used without an OnStar data plan if you connect your car to your phone's hotspot. But it can be finicky and I've found that I have to sometimes uninstall the app and reinstall it to get it to work correctly again. I've als found that sound quality doesn't seem as good as when I'm using Spotify through my CarPlay AI box.
