Regardless, I wouldn’t buy this type of car straight off a dealer lot without being able to customize it the why I like. Especially if I’m spending nearly $100K.
I'm actually worried about the fallout on the economy from this COVID crap!!!! If things don't get back to normal quickly and people back to work and businesses opened back up you might see cancellations on orders sooner than you think.

I think people will still be willing to walk into a dealer and buy a dealer-spec'd out car once they become availalble. Right now, the demand is high enough that dealers having a car on their lot for sale, other than a used one or one that someone backed out on, is slim. If a car on the lot had what I was looking for, or at least the vast majority of the items I wanted, I would consider a purchase. Dealers, if they have sold any Corvettes at all, have a pretty good idea what options are popular and will order them accordingly.
Gm has really made it fun to customize a C8 on their build site, with more choices than ever before. A question for Corvette veterans: back in the days of the C6 and C7, could you get eventually get a discount off of MSRP on a special order? If not, I can see why some would be out there looking for a better deal on a car lingering on a dealer's lot in another year or two.

Absolutely. In normal times, you choose the car exactly the way you do now—but instead of the dealer making full MSRP with maybe $5,000 to $8,000 profit—the dealer makes $3,000 to $6,000 profit or WHATEVER the market bears. The process is the same. Only the price tag and profit changes lol. In normal times, you can usually get a better deal on the inventory simply because it has to be moved.

Yep. 18.8% discount from MSRP on my 2013. Bought from MacMulkin and did museum delivery. Granted it was the end of the C6 run, but nevertheless a sweet deal,

$3,000 off MSRP for an order in 2016 - year 3 of the C7 (from a big three dealer).
I think year 3 will also change things for the C8 in terms of showroom availability. supply and demand.
Eventually yes. You will be able to walk into a Chevrolet dealer and buy one of the several C8's thay have, and probably get a discount off MSRP. It's just not going to be a for a while Right NOW, they don't have to offer any incentives to get people to buy them. The first year sold out before they even built one, The second year is probably getting close to sold out, (if they return to a schedule of ending the model year in Aug...) But If you placed a deposit today, you might get a 2021 very late in the model year...
But yeah, eventually there will be cars in stock, and at a discount.
I think you will see the C8 process eventually go back to the C6 & C7 sales process. However, for the C8 I think it will be well into model year 2022 or even 2023 before you start seeing the order process start to go back to "normal".
The Corvette team really hit it out of the park with the C8 by being able to combine all of the performance, styling and features for the price (I believe more so than any other previous generation). Even without covid, I think we would have still been well into the 2022 model year before things started to calm down.
The demand we are seeing is usually the first 40k to 60k cars in production of each generation. The majority of the people buying them are usually the well heeled early adopters and aren't affected as much by the economy and the other adverse effects we are seeing right now.
Once supply catches up to this initial demand, which hopefully will be by the end of the 2021 model year assuming no additional manufacturing disruptions...Things should settle down a bit. However dealers are seeing unprecedented demand for the C8, so I wouldn't be surprised if the 2022 model year is mostly pre-orders as well, but some cars will be on dealer lots sooner than later.
I am thinking the 2023 model year will see inventory back on dealer lots the way C7's were back around 2016 and discounts will begin to show.

I did a a summer deposit on a 2021 at a large CA dealer. If for any reason this becomes a debacle like this year and I get bumped to 2022, I think I’ll cancel and wait for a dealer lot car.
There is a dealer in my area (large west coast city) that is "buying" their entire December allocation (six cars) to spec out of their showroom. The concept is they are betting on popular options and will be asking $15-20K premium with the hook being no waiting. Drive it off the lot immediately
