I got my car on 1/1 and now the engine cover is getting painted torch red at a local body shop for $100. have spent many hours searching for DIY led lights for the engine compartment but haven’t found what I’m looking for.
Looking to do a battery operated LED light strip. Any recommendations of products and pictures of your install. Thanks.
They are much smaller, 1inch vs 3inches, have all the same features re: color, cycling, etc. - and tuck into the sockets for the OEM lights if you had bought the appearance package. In fact they're so small you could get 8-12 of them in the recesses for the stock units. But you won't need that many - they are very bright.
Unlike the big pucks you can't see them from outside the car from behind. Come in a pack of 10 with 2 remotes. Used 3M VHB tape to secure - rated to >240F and elements. Lights will NOT be going anywhere.
Here are some pics when I was test fitting. I've since painted the sides of the pucks black and they absolutely "disappear" from the eye. If it weren't for them being round they'd look OEM. Even so you'd have to know they weren't.

The battery powered lights come in different sizes and heights. Picked mine from Amazon because when I asked a forum member who had installed similar, about how well they stayed attached and any issue, he said wish they were brighter.
I picked ones, that although slightly smaller, said they were brighter and used 3 AAA batteries. They are 2.7 inch diameter and 1 inch high (versus the 0.79 inches of the one posted above.) Here are some pics of my install and a Pic/Caption PDF: Engine_Lights.pdf (netwelding.com) I am pleased with the result. PDF shows results of my temp measurements with an IR device and double sided tape capability- no issue!.

I googled the tape you mentioned but there are many types. Can you tell me which tape you used exactly? Thanks.

Look for 3m Scotch 5952 VHB tape, honestly any of them will work well. Just clean the surfaces with alcohol and hold pressure on the tape during install. If you get the surfaces slightly warm with a hair dryer it works even better but not required... Pressure on the tape for about 30 seconds is required though.
I have the ZZ3 option (Engine Appearance) and went the PowerLabs route for $75…then put on orange Lamin-X film over the OEM lights in the engine bay. 15 minute (barely one beer) installation time. Just switch on the rear defroster and the lights come on.
