Default C8 Universal Remote System

Maybe no biggie to anyone. But in the owner's manual, programing garage door opener. Page 102, item #2, says to press and release one of the three buttons you want to program. I had to press and hold the button.... To get it to program. I was done with all three buttons in maybe less than 2 minutes. Would've been less time if I wouldn't of tried the way the manual says.

I was mostly successful, too. But for some reason was never able to get the middle one to accept a code for either garage door. May want to check that you can program all three.

The below is from the 2021 Manual. This is exactly how mine worked. There was no need for the learn button either with my Opener - Lift Master Elite

To program up to three devices:
1. Hold the end of the hand-held
transmitter about 3 to 8 cm (1 to 3 in)
away from the Universal Remote system
buttons with the indicator light in view.
The hand-held transmitter was supplied
by the manufacturer of the garage door
opener receiver.
2. Press and release one of the three
Universal Remote system buttons to be
programmed. Press and hold the
hand-held transmitter button. Do not
release the hand-held transmitter button
until the indicator light changes from a
slow to a rapid flash or continuous light.
Then release the hand-held transmitter
button.

I couldn't get my 2021 to program at all, no matter what I tried. It's worked for every GM I've owned for years. After a search, I found where someone suggested to hold the remote on the back side of the visor, where the big yellow and white sticky is. Worked like a charm.

I had no problems but I did it according to the Homelink website instructions.

I've had Homelink in cars before and this is the best one so far.

I had to press and hold the HomeLink button to get my gate opener to program.

Sadly, I tried multiple ways (how the manual says, how homelink website says and how a youtube video showed), none worked.

I may have to try this then and see if it makes any difference. So far nothing has worked for mine.

Sounds like the hassle I had with my Audi and the fix was to replace my opener with a more modern one (Mine was like 15yrs old).
Problem solved.

I have my gate and my garage door opener working correctly in my 2013 Volt and the 2021 C8. My 2017 GMC Sierra will not work with my gate opener, I have tried every published method as well. They are all HomeLink systems, I think the truck HomeLink is just finicky for some reason.

If you have an older GDO, it may have reached the limit on the number of programs. I had that problem with one. I called the opener mfg and their tech support walked me through clearing the opener. Once I did that, I programmed all the cars to that one with no issue.

This is a great suggestion from John!

I programmed the remote buttons on my C8, to use the left button to open the left garage door, and the right button to open the right garage door, and not use the center button. I first followed the instruction on the owner's manual to use other remotes on my car to "teach" the buttons on C8 to learn the same code, but that did not work, so I had to open the Genie garage door opening cover to push the learn button there, and then came back to the car to push and hold to program them. I got them all working and be able to open the doors correctly. But I also have a seperate remote opener that mounted on the wall outside of the garage, and it had been dead for a while due to dead battery, so while I was doing the C8 button programming, I added new batteries and also programed that to open the left side garage door. However, once that's programmed, the left remote button on C8 stopped working. I repeated the procedure to program it again, only to find out that the wall-mounted remote stopped working.

So I thought maybe the Genie garage door opener might only be able to remember 2 remotes, so if I use one remote on my SUV, one remote on my C8, I wouldn't be able to program the wall-mounted remote. Then I did some Google search, and there are online doc says that the door opener can actually remember 7 remote control signals, and if there's any issue to program more than 2 remote, one needs to reset and clear its memory so it can remember more. So I am also going to try to do the same here from what I learned online as well as what John suggested, by clear its memory first, and re-learn the 3 remotes (remote on my SUV, C8, and wall-mounted remote).

I've tried all suggestions and none have worked. Opener is only three years old and it worked fine on my C7.

No idea why the 2021 manual says "press and release". But the Homelink system is the same as any other Homelink system. Press and hold.. Mine worked just fine, and I didn't even consult the manual...(I've had a lot of cars with Homelink)

@2vette2 Don't discount the possibility that your C8's Homelink needs to be replaced. My middle button will not program.

Also from the OM:

Some garage door openers may require substitution of Step 2 with the procedure under “Radio Signals for Some Gate Operators” later in this section.
Radio Signals for Some Gate Operators For questions or programming help, see www.homelink.com/gm or call 1-800-355-3515. For calls placed outside the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico, international rates will apply and may differ based on landline or mobile phone. Some gate operators and radio-frequency laws require transmitter signals to time out or quit after several seconds of transmission. This may not be long enough for the Universal Remote system to pick up the signal during programming. If the programming did not work, replace Step 2 under “Programming the Universal Remote System” with the following: Press and hold the Universal Remote system button while pressing and releasing the hand-held transmitter button every two seconds until the signal has been successfully accepted by the Universal Remote system. The Universal Remote system indicator light will flash slowly at first and then change to a rapid flash or continuous solid-light. Proceed with Step 3 under “Programming the Universal Remote System” to complete.
