FWIW, when I got my C8 5 months ago there were water spots in the engine compartment. Very obvious on the flat black panels. I used Meguiar's Water Sport Remover followed by a product I had used to make my 2014 GM Splash Guards look new after I removed & installed them on my 2017 Grand Sport - Meguiar's Ultimate Black. Applied two coats and rubbed in by hand with a microfiber towel.
After washing a number of times, with no attempt to prevent rinse water from entering, there was little water or spots. I wiped what little water was there also removing dust with a towel. Several times used some waterless wash and one time another single coat of Ultimate Black. No spots, looks fine.
