best overall radar detector
Also, using JBV1 will get you crowd sourced alerts to let you know long before you get to the trap.
It is true in theory but not always the case in the real world.
The reason is as follows.
As distance from the target increases the laser spot circumference increases and it refracts/scatters more.
It is for this reason (and others) they recommend tickets not be written for vehicles targeted over 1/4 mile away with laser.
So in a situation where you are on a multilane interstate in a large city where they love to use laser rather than radar (because it simplifies identification of the offender) you will find the LEO often uses a multi shot technique of long range targeting combined with in range targeting (<1/4 mile) to nab a speeder.
During the long range targeting the laser beam diameter is much larger and it is refracted more when it hits something.
A top notch detector can possibly save you in 2 ways due to these facts.
1. If a long range shot targeted at another car diffracts/scatters you may pick up a warning even though you weren't being targeted yet.
2. If the LEO targets you at long range he may not get a good hit as his aim may not be steady but you may detect him regardless and get her slowed down before he steady's his aim and takes a second shot (which is difficult for him to do right away if you are in a hard deceleration with lots of other traffic around moving through his line of sight). Think of it like hunting a group of dear if you miss the first shot the chances of a good quality second shot go way down.
If the LEO targets you at long range, gets a good hit and reads you over the limit, he most likely will hit you again as you get within the recommended 1/4 mile targeting range, if you detect him and have slowed down before this second hit, sometimes he will let you slide if you look to be driving safely.
I know this is not full proof (nothing is in this game) but the idea if you detect a laser signal "its to late" is not always true.
Back in the early days of instant on radar many experts stated (and some still do) "if you detect instant on radar you are dead"
Most of us serious road runners with high quality detectors know this isn't always true either.

OTOH, an RD won't be useful when the cop is using laser, and less useful with instant-on radar.
The two technologies complement each other, but neither really replaces the other.
Foolproof? No. But still useful.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
To me - Good BSM filtering is HUGE !!!! I'm willing to give up some range for better filtering of false signals. I drive on NE Highways a LOT and there is typically a LOT of traffic. My older Escort detector has become a new vehicle detector - some days it's alerting more time than it's not - it's now functionally useless.
Is radar detector detection important to you ? For most of us - it isn't, but for some people it's VERY important.
How willing are you to use a cell phone "app" with your detector ? I personally feel that the detector should be a "plug & play" solution. I don't want to have it connenct to the phone or to a car hotspot or to anything other than power - I want it to tell me when there is police radar in the area - Period.
As for Thea - well I hope that it's as good as people seem to think it will be, and that it gets released soon - but for now - it's a completely unproven pipe dream, and no one has a clue how much it will cost, or if it'll be available anytime in the next few years. Until I can hear see some actual performance data from production units, and until I can actually order one - It's just not part of my equation.
Obviously - anyone who has ever run with a radar detector should know - it is not going to consistently save your bacon. At best - it will shift the odds to an extent - but if you are speeding and the police are using either Laser or Instant On - and doing their job well - when you get the alert - you have just been clocked, and if you were significantly over the posted limit - you're likely to be seeing flashing lights in your mirror shortly.

I am sold on radar detection although I just got a super speeder ticket on I-95 in Georgia- my radar detector became a ticket detector. I still believe in them for situational awareness- and if I wasn’t cranking the music, with top down...I believe I would have caught a warning earlier from him hitting cars up ahead of me.
although i get beat from time to time with the radar, it’s saved me TONS OF TIMES. Information is good. So many times it goes off and I start looking and I see them hiding, I will say that I feel it’s paramount to get one that shows the direction of the source of the radar. It’s especially important cause it lets you know when you pass the source, letting you know it’s “clear” up ahead.
also, the escort 360 detectors are excellent at recognizing and automatically ignoring false alarms. You can see the radar being detected at actual strength but the warning lights and sounds are muted - honestly, it’s a great radar detector. I have the max 360c and just got the redline 360c...one of the biggest differences being that the redline is undetectable by the law.
also the 360’s are held by magnet so you can grab em quick and throw in your glove box if pulled over.
