The Thunderbird started as a two seater in '55 (a response to the C1?).
Perhaps they are planning a re-visit to that configuration (modernized) - maybe a poor man's GT40?

If I were a Ford Exec and somebody suggested launching a direct Corvette competition, I'd immediately send them to re-hab.

Problem is Ford’s lineup makes no damn sense. For sports cars you have a Mustang that ranges from $27k to $110k, then nothing till you’re at a half million dollar exotic. Mustang is both the name of a lame *** electric crossover and a muscle car. GT is both a trim level for Mustangs and a super car that looks nothing like a Mustang.
GT40 is an old nameplate that Ford somehow managed to lose the rights to like a bunch of startup amateurs despite being an over 100 year old company that invented the assembly line.
They could compete with a C8 but instead they blew their wad on a glorified 760 hp version of 16 year old girl’s EcoBoost Mustang.
Thunderbird was a butchered name from way back that went from “Ford’s Corvette” to an old man luxo coupe, then retro “50’s nostalgia-mobile” for really old men. Nobody under the age of 80 wants a Thunderbird. The idea that Ford just now filed for the name “Thunderbird” they came up with almost 70 years ago makes me question who the hell is running their copyrighting. Perhaps it explains why Ford seems to only be able to recycle the same 5 or so words for every imaginable nameplate.
Then we got the GT.
“Mustang GT”
“No just GT”
“my son has a GT”
“No, your son has a Mustang, a ‘GT’ is a super car”
“I’m pretty sure he said he bought a GT”
“No that’s a trim level, a GT is a super car that your son cannot afford. It’s $500k”
“Oh, My neighbor just bought the new Mustang GT, it’s electric, that’s what you’re talking about right?”
“No, again that a trim level and a car that’s nothing like a Mustang nor a GT. That’s a Mach E Mustang GT”
“I’m confused, so he has a Mach E Mustang GT500 that’s $500k?”
“No a Mustang GT500 is a competitor to the Corvette that’s also a Mustang, but it’s not a GT nor a Mustang Mach E GT, and it’s not a Mustang GT, it’s a Mustang GT500.”
”I’m confused”

The two Fords I've bought over the past 42 years, have given me much greater service/reliability than the two Cadillacs I previously owned in the 1970s. Although my two Corvettes bought new, have been stellar sports cars.
Ford has succeeded with the Ford GT, where GM hasn't in that vein. Nuff said.
If anyone has a lead on a reasonably priced used 2019 or 2020 Ford GT, PM me. I'm in the market for one.
