Default Vin?

Does the last 5 or 6 of the VIN represent which number the car was produced? Is this for a production year?

Yes and no.

Right now there aren't any C8s with special VIN sequences. With the C7, the Z06, ZR1, and some of the special editions had special VIN sequences. So in 2017 for example, you could have two Stingrays come down the line that were 100500 and 100501, then a Z06 that was 600425, and then a Grand Sport Collector's Edition that was 300005, followed by another Stingray that was 100502. So that Stingray was #502...of the Stingrays. It may have actually been the 645th car down the line. Once you add pre-production cars into the mix, it screws it up even more. So even with the C8, you may have VIN 100200, but it's actually the 243rd car down the line or something. It depends on how many pre-production models they built that year. Those would have been VIN 00xxxx.

If you want to know what order your car actually came down the line, you need to get a build sheet from the museum, or find the assembly line sticker on your car. It has an assembly sequence number that shows what order your car actually came down the line in. The stickers on the C7 were on the front crash beam. I'm not sure where it's at on the C8.

BGA uses Sequence number to keep track of every single vehicle going down the assembly line. As the previous post mentioned, there are many different vehicles going down the assembly line at any time making up the 1 for 1 sequntial sequence number which has many different types of VIn numbers.

The VIN number has special features within it to designate the various differences mentioned, but production C8s are sequenced in order from 00001 until the end of the model year when it starts over at 00001 with the year digit increasing by 1 (letter). See the attached images.
