I agree with the posts above. Also, you have identified the group you will likely do events with. Go on their web site and see what their rules and training/safety requirements are. Maybe you can talk with someone that runs with that group on a regular basis and they can explain how the events and safety/tech are handled.
Chevy has a detailed list of what they want you to do to prep your Z51 for track days. They do not recommend the non-Z51 for track days although a new student is unlikely to run the car very hard. That is not a criticism, just a fact. Many think that driving up to full speed on the track is like driving fast on the highway. It isn't, it is way beyond that and there is much to learn about yourself, your car and each track.
