GM's high security wheel locks offer a little more protection from someone slamming a socket over them. The lock has an outer ring that spins. These locks are made by McGard for GM. I do hide my key and I'm not going to get into a debate on wheel lock effectiveness.
I was surprised my 2022 C8 z51 did NOT come with locking lug nuts, what are you guys using to protect your wheels from theft?
I don't know if they're worthwhile but the black wheel locks @ $125 are in my 2023 build which I should have in a couple of months if constraints don't delay it. I put the wheel locks in my build originally due to planning to use the C8 as a daily driver and long distance travel car which would have meant frequently parking overnight in unattended small town hotel lots. I doubt that I need wheel locks now since I now plan to use the C8 only locally and occasionally and it will probably never be parked overnight outside our garage. Wheel theft and theft of anything not locked down is common in my rural Missouri hometown where the main industry is a prison.
I was watching a YT video with Rick Conti and his service guy in the last week. He and his service guy both agreed that wheel locks do nothing to prevent someone from stealing your wheels. If they want them. They will get them. I won't be using them when I swap my stock wheels next week for HRE wheels.
^^^
I wouldn't accept Conti or his service guy as an authority on anything. These are the same guys that didn't know where the jacking points on the C8 are, and had a customer's C8 wobbling around in the air. All Conti cares about is clicks.
NOT on any of my vehicles, ever. Let 'em have the tires and wheels if they want, but I don't want them destroying half the car trying to get them off, getting pissed and destroying the rest of the car in anger and frustration.
I’m the only person I’ve ever met who has had wheels stolen and I had wheel locks.
FYI they just smash the window and take your wheel key.
Your post is interesting. Thieves may assume you keep the key in the car IF you have locks and therefore smash your windows even if you do not keep the key in the car. I'd rather have the wheels stolen than have my windows broken out. The black car half sitting on the ground posted a few threads back makes me feel like placing a jack next to the car. Kidding of course, but having the wheels stolen may be the least of the worries when dealing with the thieves.
they sell sockets to remove locking lug nuts without a key.
Those won't work on locks with spinning outer collars, like the GM High Security locks or similar Gorilla ones. They can hammer over the lock, but the outer collar just spins without turning the nut.
