Is this normal ? Or is the driver doing something "wrong"
Had a C8 pass by me this afternoon. As he went by I distinctly hears two backfires, which may have been at the same time as a gear change. Since the car was accelerating, it was definitely not a downshifitng "noise".
Has anyone experienced or heard this ? What is it ?

Uh, yes, the C8 pops between shifts. The C7 does also. When my C7 got past break-in I aborted a pass the first time I heard it, thought I broke something. It is on purpose for the fun of it.
Retarded timing during aggressive upshifting in lower gears. Unburnt fuel is popping in the headers.
Some people with ECU's that are unlocked get a little silly with this (no, not the C8, the teenager down the street that inherited his mom's Camry).
The reason is to reduce the stress on the transmission & clutches during the upshift.
This is part of Shift Without Lift shifting. During a shift without lifting off the throttle the spark is cut to relive the pressure on the transmission gears so the next shift can be made. After the next shift is made the spark resumes which ignites the unburned fuel in the exhaust pipe which makes the pop.we all love.
