Default 3LT Dash check-in

For those of you that have a 3LT C8 how is your dash holding up? I know the 3LT C7's has an issue with the leather bubbling up of coming loose from where it was glues/stapled.

Now that we are in the 4th model year of the C8 how are the 3LT C8 dash materials holding up? I really like the thought of a 3LT with the yellow stitching, but I want to see some feedback from the community on C8's that have been on the road a while.

Have seen isolated cases of them bubbling up. However if you properly protect your dash from the sun at times it would be exposed at length to UV, I believe that you wont have issues barring some failure of QC. Get a sunshade or cover the dash with a light colored blanket or towel if its going to be out at high noon and baking for hours on end. 4000 miles in 4 months here, garage kept, seldom brought to work because I work 24 hour shifts.

C6 had the issue as well. GM supposedly fix the 3LT dash issues in 2019 by adding staples and a different adhesive, however there were still many 2019s that had the issue, some more than once.
Hopefully it has been resolved with the C8.

My C8 3LT dash is holding up fine but my car is garaged.
It is important to not that the C7 and C8 dash designs are different. The C8 dash has less area close to the windshield and the defroster vents aren't surrounded by the leather. This was one of the problem areas in the C7.

Against popular believe, exposure to sun/heat has little or nothing to do with the 3LT dash issues as many C7 3LTs that reside in cooler northern states and garage queens that have had little or no exposure to sun have had shrinking/receding dash issues and many 3LT C7s that reside in FLA, TX, AZ and have had almost constant exposure to sun and heat have not. It's more a materials and/or execution issue that effects some C6s and C7s, and perhaps C8s, though I haven't heard of any 3LT C8s with the condition.

I agree that's most likely the reason few if any C8 3LTs have had dash issues. However, that still didn't keep me from avoiding the C8 3LT.

My 3LT will be 2 years old in August and is dash etc is fine. I also don't believe the C8 3LT dash is the same material as the C7 3LT where "some folks" had issue, far from a majority.

Since GM does not say what the 1LT, 2LT or 3LT dash is made from or frankly what any of what they had called soft touch materials OTHER THAN THE SEATING SURFACE which in the GT2 seats is real tanned animal hide called Napa. (Napa was named after a tanning process developed in Napa CA in the late 1800reds but now refers to a quality real tanned animal hide.) All other what GM calls "leather" is probably GM's coined name for faux "leather" Mulan. Some soft touch materials like the C7 may be cheaper Vinyl.

Although it was speculated even the top of the line C7 seat bolsters were not real tanned leather, GM for the C8 admits they are Mulan (see pic.) GT1 seats are faux leather Mulan. The only other reference indicated it's possible the Drive Mode Wrist Rest may be Napa! I highly doubt if any other material is real animal hide in any level!

In the C7 it was pretty clear the 3LT dash was different than the 1 and 2LT because the 1 and 2LT did not have reported shrinkage. That dash was probably Vinyl (Polyvinylchloride, made from salt!) It was also indicated by a BG manager, Mulan in the C7 was what is called bonded leather, used extensively in the furniture industry. It's Vinyl with 10 to 20% finely chopped real leather scraps added as a filler. Vinyl typically uses a cheap filler, Calcium Carbonate (Lime.)

A forum member found a reference to a C8 3LT dash part he bought was labeled Polyurethane. That is a higher cost man-made faux leather that (at least my street rod made from Ultraleather Polyurethane) does not have ground up leather.

So far no indication the 3LT dash has a shrinkage or that it's any different than a 1 or 2LT dash re issues. If it's the higher quality Polyurethane Faux leather shrinkage issues are not likely.

In addition my 3LT dash about 1 foot in from the windshield has a non leather, not soft touch material that is a type of plastic . It looks like it is designed to stop glare. The vent where there was shrinkage in the C7 is in that material not the soft touch whatever!

My 3LT dash is perfect after nearly 18 months. I had the bubbling issue in my 427 vert which lived in the same spot for most of its life.

My 2020 c8 3LT had a pretty good size bubble in the dash. I took it to the dealer who was instructed by GM to take specific pics and send to them. A day or so later it was approved and the dealer installed a new dash. The car is garaged and a quality window shade is used.

Did they diagnose it at all? Was it an install defect from the factory?

IMO, no C8 dash is real tanned animal hide. May be what GM calls, Mulan which is their name for fake, man made leather or perhaps i's Vinyl. Both can be made with more of less grain leather look. For the C7 they said they use three soft touch materials, 1) real tanned annimal hide for the top of the line Seat "seating surface," 2) Mulan their name for fake leather and 3 Vinyl. Never said where each was used except the seating surface of the best seat.

Not sure what the 3LT is made from. A forum member said a 3LT dash part he bought said Polyurethane. That is a more expensive fake leather material than Vinyl.

all I was told is it was an issue with the adhesive not seen on every dash. My dealer had one other C8 with the same problem.

I was just letting him know which interior I had. Leather was just an easy term to use...

I have natural dipped as well. No tint other than what comes from the factory. I live in Texas and drive it to work atleast 2-3x a week and it sits outside in the sun for my whole 10hr shift. No issues so far. I did start putting up a sunshade on the windshield a couple of weeks ago since its over 100 outside everyday now. It is garaged when at home, but my garage will read 103 during the day.
