Got a request on my screen to "Update Available" Can this be done while driving as I have read of issues with battery drain doing it overnight in a garage.

I would park mine in the garage with top up, at least one window down. Hood ajar with battery tender attached. Updates are not supposed to take overnight - a few minutes to maybe in the low hour range. Most believe that if the update is ready for installation, it has already been downloaded to the car, so no connectivity to the internet is supposed to be necessary. I have only had one update - last year - and it was short, and successful.

Here is the relevant into from the 2023 Owners Manual, note that it says that the software can be download (not installed) during normal driving, via a 4G (cellular) connection to the internet or a Wi-Fi connection to the internet. Once downloaded it is ready to install. Note it says that the vehicle will be disabled and cannot be driven during installation. Somewhere I read, maybe in the owners manual or the service manual that the installation will not initiate if the battery charge level is below some limit.

I leave a window open, the top up and the hood ajar for easy access in the (I hope unlikely) even that the update fails and the car is "bricked". The battery maintainer is connected - it may or may not help anything but it doesn't hurt.

There are horror stories about updates draining batteries and “bricking” the car. Ergo, it’s advisable to do the OTA update at home outside of your garage in your driveway and when you know you don’t need to go anywhere for a while.

I did my first and only update on my 2022 a couple of weeks ago with no problems. Installed update in the middle of the day and took all of five minutes.

YMMV on this and I don’t discount the problems others have reported here on the Forum, but if you think you will have a problem with the the update, see if your dealership will install it for you rather than using the OTA update.

I wonder if the folks having issues with the OTA updates have active 4G plans?

Active doesn't mean a paid subscription. I don't have a paid 4G subscription but the system is still active.

I don't know that. I do not have a 4G plan. I don't believe a plan is needed for OTAs to download via 4G. I believe it retains a 4G connection to support the minimal on-star connectivity that remains without a subscription. I never did have a subscription nor did I activate any trial service. My first update was several months after delivery. But...I also connected my car to the internet via Wi-Fi in my garage. So it can also download software that way.

Be prepared. The first OTA we did wouldn't start without our iPhone being present and connected via Car Play. Got the OTA available screen, I clicked the Install Now, got the alert message to be in park, doors might be inoperable, turn the car off, etc. But then no phone found. You need your iPhone/Car Play to continue. No idea why? Maybe the update was in part Car Play related? But had to back out of the screen, retrieve my phone from the house, and start again. Next time I'll have it on hand in the car. Like a the true Scout I was. Though once a Scout always a Scout.

You miss my speculative point…

If you don’t have a paid 4G subscription, you will still get the updates. I realize that. I’m saying that with an active 4G subscription, perhaps it downloads applies it faster with less issues (?)

I realize the car is off when updating and perhaps so is the 4G, so my speculation may be unfounded. It’s just a thought.

It is a two step process, download and update. Once it asks if you want to perform the update the download portion of the process is complete. It doesn't matter whether you have wi-fi or 4G access at that point.

Lots of horror stories here, at least there were. Maybe the issue(s) have been corrected?

Odd I knew I would be parked and running for a while today. Checked for updates but none were available 2 days ago I received a message about "Update Available"

Guess it installed itself or deleted itself Just ODD.

Yeah. I had one update last year that worked. No notice of any update being available after that, and also none showed up when I used the "check for updates" in the car But......a month or so ago when I got in the car I got a message that an "update failed" or "update not successful". Something like that. Even though I did not approve or even receive a message about an update. As of this day, I still only show the on update that was done last in.
