My 23 C8 HTC with 2775 miles has an engine tick. Dropped it off at the dealer tonight. Is this normal? What do you all think the dealer should do? What if they say it is normal?
Thanks so much,
Scott
I don't think it has anything to do with DI, it's a sewing machine sound common on all LS/LT motors. It's the lifters being pushed up and down by the push rods, (which open and close your valves.) There have been issues with some of the lifters, but these were usually the AFM lifters. The OE lifters that GM use are kinda cheap and as such, random failures are not unheard of. I didn't use them (not even new ones) when I went through my LS7 (went with Johnson 2110 lifters like what GM uses in their COPO Camaro's).
I've got the same "ticking" sound in my 2021 Z51 2LT. Definitely sounds like a valve/lifter kind of thing. Good news is it doesn't always happen and when it does it's mostly before the engine is fully warmed up and it seems to go away completely after 15 minutes of driving. In a year i've only got 2800 miles on it and it seems to be happening less often and goes away quicker too. It's just a bit of an annoying sound and doesn't seem to be affecting anything. When I take the car in to the dealer (Stingray Chevrolet) for its first oil change and trans filter i will mention it to them. If anyone has heard this before they probably have, but I'm not sure what can be done without dropping the engine.
LT1 & LT2 are both very noisy engines. DI & AFM the main culprits.
AFM doesn't add more noise. If anything, in 4 cyl mode it would be marginally quieter, since only 4 injectors are firing and only 8 valves are opening and closing.
As far as the OP's concern, without hearing it no one knows. It's probably just the injectors, which is normal, but it could be a bad lifter, an exhaust leak, or maybe other things. Diagnosing a noise without being able to hear it is kind of a fool's game.
Thank goodness it’s not a spun crank bearing. Those sound like ticking too. There is a good vid on YouTube of a brand new GT350 or 500 at the dealer ticking away with its spun bearing. It was a hand built engine as well. Probably built on a Monday!
