Default P0442 Code Info? - Searched, nothing found

My scanner shows P0442 today at the gas station after filling up. CEL and this code came up which appears to be EVAP related.

I saw plenty of posts for C7, C6, C5 but not C8.

Anyone have experience and what to expect until I can get it to service?

Thanks

Evap system leak detected. More than likely the gas cap wasn’t on correctly. Check it and have the code reset.

The C8 (like many newer GM vehicles) does not have a "gas cap", just a little spring loaded door in the filler neck.

And I just filled up our new Silverado with the same system this morning. Duh. Sorry

Brett, Did you leave the car running when you put gas in it, or start it before you removed the gas nozzle? This may have caused the CEL.

No to both. Just filled up and got in to start the car and my first CEL.

I cleared the code but it, at first, left it in "permanent" status. Drove today and haven't seen it come back. I will double check and pull the code before I even bother to take it in. Doesn't seem like a big deal?

I've had such on several vehicles over the years. If they had a gas-cap I'd clean the seal and mating surface... or, on cars without caps I took the included funnel and pushed it in and out of the filler spout a number of times. Unless I actively erased the codes (often on the road when it happened and no reader present) it then went away on its own after another fill-up or two! All the best.

Anyone stupid enough to refuel with the engine running would likely not give an honest answer to that question

Talked to my service advisor Corvette specialist and he said no worries and no effect on car running etc. If it pops to again I'm to call him.

Open the gas cover and with your finger press the seal flap several times and it should solve the problem. Give it a try

Can't hurt, why not?
Or, make sure you press the fill pipe cover in enough that it sets and locks closed.

On many (or maybe all) of these capless fill tubes, there are two spring loaded flaps, not just one. The outer (top) reachable flap is more a dust/dirt cover, but it's the inner flap that leaks and causes the P0456 or worse leak P0442.

The inner flap which is the seal that is needed to pressurize the system during the EMS startup test is opened by the tip of the fuel filler nozzle. If the C8 has the lower flap that is not sealing well, that is the problem.

On my non C8 car, I was able to temporarily hold open the top flap and shoot a small spray of silicone which would temporarily fix P0442, until the next fillup. Eventually I had to replace the filler neck @ over $1,000 for the part.
