Transmission Shift Problem

Have a friend who was experiencing shift problems. Took it in to the local Chevy house and they said that:

The shift forks were gunked up and preventing proper shifting. They used a non-invasive technique to vibrate the shift forks to basically "shake the crud off". He has the car back and says it's shifting as well as ever.

Anyone heard of this problem/fix? New one on me.

Maybe I misunderstood and he said valves instead of forks.
