You can think of it as a very long lasting wax. There are a lot of myths about ceramic coatings, particularly about the amount of protection they offer and how long they last.
The primary benefits are water shedding and beading behavior, and UV protection. Beyond its hydrophobic qualities, it doesn't offer any protection against rocks, etc. Keep in mind ceramic coatings form a very thin layer on the paint. In comparison, clear coat is MUCH thicker. There are some benefits to scratch protection. We've come a ways with coatings, there are cheaper diluted spray on coatings and graphite coatings that will last for months at a time. I'd suggest opting for those for most owners.
On the higher end of the ceramic coating spectrum, there are some semi self-healing coatings, which are interesting. I could go on about this topic, but in conclusion ceramic coatings are great for what they do. Unless it's a garage queen, maintenance is required for it to continue to perform. If you want protection against road debris, spend your money on paint protection film. Many PPF brands have hydrophobic films nowadays.
Had mine done immediately after pick up. 2 seasons on it. Never had to touch wax it or wash it. Actually told not to touch the surface. Do not touch wash and do not wax.Go to a you spray car wash and drive dry. Micro fiber towel to get a few spots or drips. Nothing sticks. Not tar bugs etc. Looks like it was done yesterday. Will never ever go without it on any vehicle. Always looks great and easiest to maintain. Had the wheels and engine compartment done too. PPF only done on the top side of rocker panels where one tends to drag their foot across.
Did it myself. A lot of work but worth the results. I put two coats on. Car looks unbelievably good when I wash it...no need to wax. Did it almost 2 years ago and it still looks great.

Are you able to share what brand product you used? If you were to do it again today, would you use the same or would you switch to a different brand? Thanks
Wow! I LOVE THIS FORUM! Thanks to all of you for examples and recommendations! I have two final questions. (Pardon my ignorance). What is PPF? I also have a fully customized 69 that was painted in 1972. (Check my profile pick and album). The paint is a silver under base, heavy metal flaked green paint, layers of custom candy paint and 26 coats of clear lacquer. I had a lacquer layer removed and it made the paint look much nicer. I wonder if ceramic coating would be a good option for this 50 year old paint????
Gonna wipe it down with a terry cloth today since that's all I really need to do. It was an absolute must do for me since the car sits in the sun so much.
