Default Checking oil

I have about 4000 miles on my 2022 c8. I was checking the oil with the engine running. Is it normal for the oil cap to be under pressure with some oil spitting out when unscrewing the cap? This is the only car Ive had where you have to have it running to check. I thought there might be a little too much oil. If there was too much would the pressure gauge show it? After I thought maybe I should have shut off the engine then unscrew the cap then restart the car. Thanks in advance.

What cap are you unscrewing? All you have to do is pull the dipstick.

it looked a little low on the dip stick. So was going to top it off.

Yes, you probably should shut the engine off to add oil. Wouldn't worry about adding oil until the dipstick says so.

1. Is it normal for the oil cap to be under pressure with some oil spitting out when unscrewing the cap? There is a tube that runs from the oil tank to the rocker arm covers as part of the crankcase ventilation system. When the engine is running that will result in pressure changes in the tank and (based on your experience) will result in pressure and spitting with the top removed.
2. I thought there might be a little too much oil. - what did the dipstick say? The manual says if overfilled you need to find a way to remove some oil.
3. If there was too much would the pressure gauge show it? No.
4.After I thought maybe I should have shut off the engine then unscrew the cap then restart the car. Don't run the engine with the tank cap removed. Run the engine til warm. Check the oil with the dip stick. If oil level is between the marks, you are good. If it needs oil, stop the engine - add a little - check again. Don't overfill.

Don't know exactly where the max oil level is BUT it's close to there the fill tube is located. Yep would expect some oil would come "spit" out with the engine running as it's being pumped from the engine sump etc with lots of air from the scavenge pumps.

As has been noted by others, best to wait until it says add (which I suspect is like the C7 dry sump which was when it was one full quart) and add if needed with the engine off! NO reason to try to keep it at the MAX level. And that is the proper word "Max" not "Oil Should be at Level."
