Default Flat Tire!

I can't believe it, but I got a flat on my 2022 C8 Z51, with just over 700 miles on the odometer. I had just pulled into a gas station, and was filling up, and I happened to glance at the left rear tire, only to see the top of a bolt sticking in the tire, extending about 1/2 inch out, and located right where the sidewall/tread come together. I hadn't gotten any indications of loss of pressure on the TPS, and I didn't hear or feel any air coming out. I tried to pull on it, hoping it might just have gone into the surface of the tire, but it was in solid. When I got back in the car, the TPS showed the air pressure down to 17 PSI, and then started a drop to zero. This was the first time I'd ever driven on a flat run-flat tire. I couldn't feel a difference, honestly. I kept the speed as low as a I could to try to minimize any stress on the tire. I figured I must have picked up this debris either as I was pulling into the gas station, or just before. When I got home, I pulled out the bolt, with great effort, with a pliers. it was about 3 inches long, almost all of it embedded in the tire. i figured it had no pressure anyway, so I wanted to get it out to prevent it from possibly coming out on its own and damaging the bodywork or worse.

I now it's a long story for a simple flat tire, but it is really frustrating, as I am trying to be so careful with the car. It's just one of those things. I've had the car 10 months now, so I decided to have its oil changed (first one) since it was in the shop anyway, I paid for it, as I'm going to use the 2 year 'first service' when the car reaches 2 years old. I know it won't be anywhere close to 7500 miles, but that's the way it goes. I'm just glad to have finally gotten fresh oil in it. Maybe now, with fresh, clean oil, I'll actually try to get the car up to some speed instead of babying it so much.

Too bad but flat tires due to road debris come with the territory, driving any vehicle. I'm unsure if the bolt was in the sidewall (tire destroyed) or if it was in a location where the tire could be repaired/reused. Hopefully the latter. It sounds like you did the right thing: driving slowly and then presumably looking to repair the tire right away. Everyone I've talked to says these run-flat tires are usually beyond salvage, if you drive too far on them when flat, otherwise a plug and inner patch generally work for a repair. I keep a tire repair kit and compressor in my C8, just in case I'm able to pull out the foreign object, plug the hole and then limp to a garage...to improve my chances of repairing the tire. Here's wishing you better luck in future (no more flats)!

I can relate… picked up a screw on my front right tire at 900 miles (2023 70th) oh well, it’s just a tire, I could have patched it but my OCD wouldn’t let me 😁

Sorry, if course. But, it happens to many of us if we drive 'em. Been there. Could have been something serious.

That's why it's a good idea to purchase a road hazard warranty from Discount Tire (American Tire in California).

Considering all the things that can go wrong with a C8, a flat tire though inconvenient, is really pretty insignificant when you think about it.

Did just that as soon as I got home from museum delivery. Less than the cost of replacing a tire.

Found a screw in the right front tire last week and Discount Tire was able to patch since it was in the tread.

Welcome to the club unfortunately

I've had 2 in 10 months, 600 miles. 1 new tire, 1 patch. If screw is outside of the first groove, it is new tire time. Inside toward center, patch. Aside from the cost, no big deal, it is still a Game Changer that looks great even with a flat tire.

Happened to me at around 1500 miles. Happened to me a few times in my C6 also. One time the tire shop guy pulled out a truss bolt. He looked so excited. I was not. He said it was the biggest bolt he ever pulled out of a tire, and asked to keep it. I obliged.

I've concluded that the acceleration generated by a corvette is so powerful and graceful that it must create a slight magnetic field that pulls sharp objects toward the tires. Usually you can drive faster than they can be pulled in, but every once and a while they win.

Yes happened to me at 500 miles. Service advisor said the dealership won’t patch run flats. The mechanic patched the tire and said don’t listen to the service advisors in the future. Sam

I’ve considered going to discount tire and buying replacement certificates on the tires. They will offer them on new tires not sold by them as long as they aren’t heavily used. While I NEVER buy a warranty on anything, I’ve found the tire replacement certificates worthwhile, especially at the cost of the run flats!

I posted this image previously in another thread of where you may and may not repair tires. Allowable inside first groove, else R&R if outside on outer 1-2".

Default Tire repair

6300 miles driver front. Looked like a hex screw in deep hit bullseye to the first deep groove. Has to trash it. TPS read 7 psi and stayed there. Drove 10 miles on Interstate 95 not much over 50 mph. All good. Good thing its a run flat but tire service center suggested replacement with non run flat but I said go to hell. Would need to replace the whole set for balance and alignment trim. $525.

Great that the C8 comes with runflats and you were able to get home safely. Never know when a tire might pick up a screw or nail.

Thanks for the commiseration, folks. As luck would have it, last week, the OTHER rear tire had a screw in it! I just replaced THAT tire this morning. That's $1200 in tires in the last 3 weeks. At this rate, I think I'm going to have to park the C8 and just look at it. I can't afford to drive it!

Just be glad you didn't run over a skunk instead. Btw, the C8 doesn't do a good job of isolating outside air from the cabin. What is up with that?
