Default DCT First Filter Change

I have recently purchased a 2021 C8, 27 months old with 5,400 miles on it. It did not have the DCT canister filter change since it had not reached the 7,500 miles requirement. I guess the original owner forgot about the 24 month requirement.

Should I have the filter change done now, I guess at my expense, or just wait for the 36 month DCT fluid change?

I wouldn't change it until 7500 miles. Then evaluate if you want to change the fluid then also.

There is no 24-month requirement it's just that GM will reimburse you if you do it within 24 months.

The requirement is to have it done at 7500 MI. Since you are already expired on the free DCT filter change I certainly wouldn't have it done at 5400 miles and then again at 7500 mi which is what would be required but that's me and that's your choice.

Was the engine oil/filter changed? There's a 1 year requirement on that.

I would go ahead and get it changed. 24 months is a long time and your warranty won't be voided if you do it now and don't do it at 7500 miles according to my dealer as I had mine changed at 12 months and 4600 miles with my free oil change ( this was before the two year option came up).

This is the opposite of what you want to do. Unfortunately many dealerships give crap advice

There is no time requirement for the dct filter.

If you don't change it again at 7500 you will not be complying with the scheduled service requirements. It's in your owner manual

1) Hopefully the engine oil and filter were changed at 12 months and again at 24 months
2) Transmission fluid will need to be changed at 36 months. Its not a problem if it is changed early.
3) The transmission fluid external canister filter needs to be changed at, or very near to 7500 miles - not early. If it is changed early it needs to be changed again at 7500. There is inconsistent information on how close to 7500 miles is close enough - but recent verbal info from a GM rep (reported on the forum by a forum member) said 6500-7500 is close enough.

So - I would not change the DCT filter now at 5400. But will you get to 7500 miles (or at least 6500 miles), or 36 months first? I would probably change the fluid and the DCT filter at or near 7500 or at 36 months whichever is first.

@bhvrdr is correct. The DCT filter is still collecting "stuff" in your transmission and time doesn't impact that - it's the mileage. I would wait until at or just before the 7500 mile mark for the DCT flush and new filter. You might need to educate your dealer!

I am in a similar situation (I bought 2020 a couple months ago with about 3400 miles) and have owned many DCT cars though this is the first one that required this type of maintenance at a specific milage. I was told by my local dealer that it is best to wait until 7500 miles. Though for me (I own a bunch of cars just bought another on Monday) it might be a few years before I am at 7500 miles.

I will be close to the 7500 mile limit for the canister filter around early December, which will be 2 years and 11 months of in service time for the vette. I am planning on doing the fluid and canister filter change then. Unfortunately it will be on my "dime". Anybody know the cost for the canister filter change and the fluid change as separate billings?

The dealer doesn't make warranty decisions, and most dealers are clueless. GM has specifically said the filter needs to be changed at 7500 miles, even if it was changed earlier. That is the required maintenance, and the warranty booklet makes it clear you need to perform the required maintenance to keep the warranty in force.

And there is NO TIME REQUIREMENT for the DCT filter specified anywhere. Not in the owners manual, not in the service manual, and not in the recent Techlink article that reinforced the 7500 mile requirement. 24 months is irrelevant to anything about the "free" maintenance.

Default I think GM needs to do something here

What if you are nearing 24 months and you're around 6000 miles let's say? Damned if do damned if you don't at that point. For low-mileage cars they should extend the free service to 3 years...

It's a free service. Nobody really owes us anything but they offer a free service within 2 years so if you were close to 2 years and you had 6,000 miles on it I would personally use that free service and then simply pay out of pocket at 7500.

That said if you had a little bit better idea of how many miles you were putting on you might consider doing it at one year or 3,000 miles that way you get a nice free early change and a nice even interval at 7500 mi when you know you have to change it again.

But yes I do agree with you 100%, it would be so much simpler if general motors had allowed you to split up the two services which are the oil change service and the DCT filter change service and then the DCT filter change service reimbursement really should have no time limit since changing it has no time limit.

That would suck. I'm at 5000 miles now and my two years will run out in September. If I'm not closing in to 7500 by July I'm taking a road trip!
