How low does the fuel level have to get before the ‘low fuel’ indicator comes on? I’ve been in the ‘red’ a few times …. with 30 miles remaining…. and no low fuel warning. Seems a little odd. The owners manual is pretty vague. What have others experienced?
My general rule of thumb is that the light on almost all cars comes on with about 2 gallons left. I have no idea if I heard that somewhere or if I made it up, so take it with a grain of salt. But by my theory, it does make sense that the light comes on for people at varying "miles remaining". So if you average 14 MPG generally, it wouldn't come on until 28 miles remaining, for example. While it's clearly anecdotal and I don't watch super closely, the theory is consistent with what I've experienced in any car that I've paid attention. So I think if the light comes on, you can stretch the miles remaining if you drive more conservatively that you normally do.
I'm curious what your normal MPG is to see if I may be right or if it's complete BS
I don't know. I thought it was 5 liters. Here's a way to check. Next time it comes on, look at the "Miles left til empty" and compare that to "Estimated Fuel Economy". A little math should tell you pretty close. Please report back any findings.
It coming on with ~50 miles left seems to indicate 10 liters. .. A 10% "reserve" would be 7 liters.
(It is more than likely measured in liters, not gallons as "the book" says it's a 70 liter tank [=18.492 gallons---close enough to 18.5])
As soon as i'm at a quartertank I start looking for a gas station. I swear mine comes on at 50 miles to empty but It could adjust to how you're driving and MPG maybe?
I let mine get low intentionally to determine how much gas I would have in "reserve" when the light came on. As soon as the low fuel light came on I filled it up and figured out I had 2 1/2 gallons left. I will assume 2 gallons for variables and to be safe.
I have not let it get that low except to test it, but it's good to know what range you have if for some reason you find yourself in that situation.
Most cars sold in the U.S use between 30-50 miles as the range before the light comes on. If you are below 30 miles and no light comes on, you might want to get it checked.
