1100 mikes and windshield has bad chip/crack. Needs to be replaced. Any advice? Dealer only repair? Anything tricky? HUD issues with non exact OEM windshield replacement?
I’ve had to do that twice. I went through my insurance for $50. The windshield and labor was pretty much $1,000 installed according to the bill. No matter what route you go make sure they are clear that this is a GM direct part only. No aftermarket yet. Saves everyone time clarifying this.
The vin number shows if it’s HUD or not. But you can always ask. Non problems twice. Just had to re-tint for myself. I believe the tint kept the glass together the second time. The glass is cheap these days.
Depending on your insurance or straight deal you should be able to use a glass shop of your choice.
I see you're in Washington, MI. I'm very close in Rochester Hills. My windshield was replaced last year by Starr Auto Glass. Owner, Mike Boley was great and used O.E.M. glass with the Zora picture. Over 40 years experience and came to my house to do it right in my garage.
Safelite uses inferior glass in my opinion. My D.D. windshield with 10k miles on a replacement looks like it's been sandblasted. Same roads. The one it replaced had 60k and not a chip. Get OEM
Fox is how I found out about Starr Glass. No recalibration was necessary. Everything works perfectly. I think calibration is only for cars that have collision avoidance braking.

This quote is so true I too have had my windshield replace twice both times I told insurance it had to be gm OEM replacement not aftermarket ,work was done by Safelite
Just had mine replaced… a few thoughts… the glass install was fine but it’s the details that might get missed, there are 2 (one on each side) screws at the bottom of the side trim pieces that didn’t get reinstalled and there was a rattle near the rear view mirror, I took the cover off and the installer had not put back the rain sensor or the PDR camera in there proper place.
I've used Safelite twice. Good install both times with no issues. The second install was delayed because the tech showed up with a non HUD glass but he recognized the problem and did not try to install the wrong glass. Here in Florida the windshield is covered under the Comprehensive portion of the policy with no deductible.

As I'm sure you've been told ONLY OEM! The other major issue is experience of those doing the work. Ask around with any local car people. Remember, it happens to many of us and we survive.
I had a chip with small spider cracks upper left corner about a year ago. Decided to have Safelight fill it. Looks good and no issues one year and about 5,000 miles later. However if the chip/crack in in line of sight the windshield must be replaced. I agree with those that say insist on OEM.
