As stated above whole house surge suppressors are easy to retrofit, as long as you have space for a double pole breaker in you panel. The Siemens unit pictured above takes up the space of 4 single pole breakers, but provides the breakers needed for the installation (and only fits Siemens panels)

Great info in this thread. I just might look into having a whole house surge protector installed in my house.

I too live in a land of lightening having lost a few trees and some minor electronics over the years (I live in the woods). Surge protectors are not all created equally, but I've never had a problem with large APC units all with computers powered by them. However, that said, with my vehicles I take the time to disconnect them when severe thunderstorms are anticipated. I've 6-vehicles on and off maintainers and I find that it's not that big a deal to make a quick pass through the shop unplugging them all at appropriate/risky times.

I have a whole house surge protection system. It is good for just that. Power goes off and comes back on it protects you from that surge. If you have close lightning strike it does absolutely nothing for you.

Maybe you need a better surge protectors, because good ones absolutely will protect against a lightning strike. The may sacrifice themselves in doing so, but still better than sacrificing a few thousand dollars in electronics or appliances (all of which are loaded with electronics now).
