My car recently failed its update for GM N23-2418150. At the end it said no changes were made and to go to dealer for update.
My question is, will the update show back up on the car or in the app, or do I have to go to the dealer no matter what?
Thanks
You can look in updates in your menu and see if an update is still ready to be installed. And I think you can see if one is ready for downlaad as well. If not, then yes, dealer - because there is no other way to get to it. I have never seen the message about going to the dealer for the update. So very likely you will not find one that is ready.
I did the same update the other day and mine apparently failed as well (or at least I think it did?)....This was my 4th update and the only one to fail out of the last 3 I had installed....
I find it interesting that it shows as being installed when you pull it up in the MyChevy App update history list however when I pull up recent updates in my C8s it does not appear....The update install notice is also no longer available for install...Guess I'll have the dealer update it when I bring my C8 in for my first oil change in a few months...
Here is my update history shown on MyChevy App that shows N23-2418150 was installed....
However, this same update N23-2418150 does not show up as installed in my C8 update history, so it most likely did not install...
We had one failed update, the first we got in early 2022. It was a little disconcerting. I launched the update manually and all went according to plan. 3 since have been flawless. No idea why it didn't install the first one on the initial try. Only the shadow knows. Maybe you're onto something with the belly rub. I'll suggest that to my wife eh?
The OTA is a two stage process. First, the update itself is downloaded to the car. GM does this in the background, you aren't aware it has happened. Presto it arrives. Then and only then do you get a notice that it is ready to install. Since you got the ready to install notice, this suggests the download step was successful. So the update is still resident on your firmware. And you can launch it manually. Once you get the available to install, you have 30 ignition cycles to install the update. After that, it is wiped from the available list. If the update ready to install notice shows up while you're in the parking of Wal Mart say, just ignore it. It will go away in 30-40 seconds. Ignoring it (do nothing) and Remind Me Later are the same event. I do ours after having driven the car on a sunny Sunday. So the battery is juiced and so am I.
Below is for MY 2021-2023,
Car parked, running, windows down from the Info Screen select:
Home>Settings>System>Vehicle Software>Updates. Both pending and installed OTAs will be listed. Find the one not installed. And follow the bouncing ball.
Edit: Good news with my strategy, in The Land of the Endless Summer all of our Sundays are sunny.

So what is the suggested/preferred/correct way in which the car should be staged in order to download/install the infamous over the air updates.
Correct way? Here is my way. Starting with the OTA already downloaded and the screen requesting an update is up (either pushed, or I looked for it, I have done it both ways). The engine is initially running. I'm in the garage, its attached to the battery tender. Frunk is ajar. driver window is down. I approve the install. It tells me to turn off the engine - I get out of the car and close the driver door. All doors are closed. Trunk is closed. Come back in half hour to 45 minutes. OTA is done. I have not had a failure so not sure what I would do if it failed. And, I'm not saying this is the correct way. Its just what I do.

I too start the engine with driver's window down before pressing the update button and wait for the message to shut down the engine. I've never had a maintainer hooked up for the update, but our car stays on a maintainer any time it sits for more than 5-6 days. Window down is enough for me because I can reach the emergency door release if something goes wrong, and use the frunk release cable under the steering column.
I started doing the engine start thing after I had 2 updates fail on the first attempt, but each of those were successful after starting the engine and trying again. In 3 subsequent updates since, they all been successful on the first attempt with engine running before starting the update.
My C8 successfully uploaded the 2nd update 2 days ago and only 6 weeks old. Noticed today a lot of what I had setup as far as options (in GPS and in the tiles) had changed on their own and I had to do a reset and program everything again. Very annoying, at least the radio presets did not change. The emergency brake also went on for this upload too. Worst problem is that I lost the different screens for track, weather, sport, etc. Everything displays sport mode no matter what I choose on the thumb wheel. I can manually choose track screen for track mode in the program menu but then everyone shows track screen. Before the update, every screen changed to its preselected screen when I moved the thumb wheel to a specific mode. Only My Mode and Z Mode could be programmed to what I wanted the screen to look like. Now the screen stays whatever I previously picked no matter what mode I am in. (If I choose track screen for track mode all other modes also display track mode.) Is there any way to contact GM to get this bug fixed?? Everything was working fine before this update.
The wild card parameter with any OTA is battery health. If the battery is below 70% efficiency, the update will fail. Ambient temperature can be a factor in battery performance. Cold weather is the bane of batteries everywhere. Cars that are driven less often and not on a battery tender should be driven awhile before attempting an OTA install. I always do the OTA immediately after having driven the car. And always check its progress status at the 10+/- minute mark. To make sure it is moving through the task menu on the screen. You see the list with a green check mark next to the install tasks that are completed. My timing diligence in question, I think most are done at the first glance. My wife drives the car most often so she sees the install notice usually. And ignores it. Tells me and I do it manually post our next Sunday drive. Lots of time to 'git ur dun'..

You need to reset your modes to screens. You do so in the menu on the right side using the arrows/toggle wheel etc on steering wheel.

The display design feature is not user friendly. There is way to set up so it behaves exactly like what you are experiencing - that is - you get the same display theme regardless of the Driver Mode. I do that intentionally. I have mine set to display the Track Driver Mode theme regardless of the Driver Mode. But that can be undone. Its somehow buried in the display design choices. If I can find it later I will post an image.
Under display design, click it, then on the next screen scroll to the one that say Link to driver mode. You may have to put it each driver mode and click. not sure. when I did it, it undid my set up and every driver mode displayed the theme specific to that mode. Since that is not what I want, I had to go back and set each to display track.
