Default Software Update Problems

I took delivery of my new C8 on 9/18/23. I have had 2 software updates already. The last update erased a lot of the programming I had done for the GPS and the Tile Screens. I had to reset everything and reprogram. I am still having an issue where when I turn the mode selector to Track, Sport, Tour etc my screen no longer changes. Each screen stays the same so if I am looking at the Sport Screen in Sport Mode and go to the Track mode, the screen still stays on the Sport graphics. If I go in and program Track Screen to match the Track mode, then all the other modes display the track screen. How can I fix this so it reacts like it did originally? I liked the screen changing to match each of its respective mode. Originally only My Mode and Z Mode let me modify the screen view. Is there any way to notify GM since it appears their upgrade has created a problem I didn’t have before. Why is my 6 week old car subject to 2 software upgrades already when I hear others haven’t had any upgrades?

I had a similar experience after this last update (N23-2418150) where all my customized DIC settings and info blocks had changed and I had to go back and change them...

To setup customized drive mode screen settings you need to go to options and make sure you are "linked to driver modes"...

Once "linked to driver mode" you can set My Mode, Z Mode, and Track to either "Touring", "Sport", or "Track" Display...

**Note that when "linked to driver mode" Weather, Touring, and Sport Mode displays will always stay at their respective displays...

You can also do the same to HUD settings as well for My Mode, Z Mode, and Track Mode

That worked! Back to where I was before the upgrade. Thank you so much!

This is a known bug of that update. Either GM failed to adequately test the update (yet again), or if there's no way to avoid this they failed to notify owners that it would happen. GM's OTA process stinks. They should be embarrassed at how badly they've screwed it up.

I just attempted to install this latest update (GM N23-2418150) BUT it would not install. It was stuck at the 10 minute mark for several minutes and then I received a message that the update was not successful.

I tried the update again but the update was not there and it disappeared. Weird. Their OTA process needs improvement.

Be happy it failed and went away. I wish I could refuse them and make them go away. The last update is full of bugs and deletes everything your programmed into the GPS and the Mode Screens. I guess I’ll get my 3rd update with my car 8 weeks old. Probably will need a battery soon too if this keeps up.

The download is done without any notice to you. It happens in the background when the car is parked. If you start the car while the download is mid-stream, it is interrupted. Then resumes when the car is parked again. I wonder if this happened and the download restart was corrupted?

When the OTA is available to install notice appears, choose Decline. It will be wiped from memory. You'll not get another notice. Though just about this one.

There is a way to disable OTA downloads completely. No idea what it is just that it exists somewhere in Settings. I think it might be in the User Manual? Most OTAs go smoothly though not all. I'd judge disabling to be a risky strategy.

You could disable all then have them installed at a dealer service appointment. En masse.

I always make sure that before I install any updates, I hook up my CTEK battery charger and make sure it's completely charged before installing the update and then keep it connected for a while after the update until I'm ready to go driving again....With this last wonky update, I made sure I kept it on overnight just to be safe!

Yes it is in the manual (up through the 2023 manuals). If you disable "download in the background", then, quoting directly from the manual it "will prompt for certain updates to be downloaded and installed. There is also an option to check for updates manually." And forum member have reported being notify of an update available for download (not to be confused with available to install).

How many updates failed with car in the garage? How many updates failed with car sitting outside?

My guess, most failed when in the garage.

Doesn't matter, I've had updates fail both inside and outside.

Garage is the ideal location to complete the OTA with the install procedure. Safe and secure universally convenient.

An OTA is a two stage process. First, GM sends the download to your car. This is done without you knowing it is occurring at some random time while the car is parked/off. Happens in the background. If you start the car during this stage, the download process is paused. Then restarted when the car is again parked/off. Only after the download is successfully received by and resident in the car's memory do you get the Ready To Install notice. Since the over the air part is already done, the install phase makes no difference indoors outdoors home or down the block. It is just you and your car together again.

Inside or outside has nothing to do with whether an update installation is successful or not. In order to install, the update has to be downloaded to your car. When you receive notification of an update, or find it on your software update screen, it has already been downloaded to your car.

Having a Wi-Fi or cellular signal is necessary for download, but once stored in your car, no signal is required for installation.

I've successfully installed 6 updates on our '22 since delivery. 2 out of 6 did not install successfully on the 1st attempt. In those cases, I started the engine, tried the update again, received a message to shut down the engine, and then those two original failures installed successfully.

What I now do, is start the engine before attempting an installation, and that has been 100% successful. Many of us suspect that starting the car first and hitting the update button while engine is running ensures that the BCM is properly configured to install the update.

I have never had the CTEK maintainer installed during updates, and all I do is leave the window down in case I need to use the door emergency release handle to get inside to use the frunk cable release under the steering column. That's never been necessary.

As time goes by and I see the issues the updates have caused, I refuse to allow any updates. I just close the updates window whenever it pops up.
My C8 is just fine the way it came from the factory. 3000+ miles without any issues.
Dead batteries, personal programming removed, change in operation. No thank you.

P.S. One last thought on installing updates.

NEVER start an update and walk away, leaving your car sitting for an extended period of time without checking after 15-30 minutes to ensure the update has successfully installed or not. Even with a CTEK hooked up, if your update attempt were to hang up in some sort of endless loop, the maintainer does not have enough "juice" to keep the battery from running down after several hours.

All of the "bricked" car reports I've read are the result of folks starting an update, then checking many hours later only to find a dead car. If it hasn't either installed or aborted after 30 minutes or so, you need to do a battery disconnect to avoid the car being disabled. That's the reason for leaving a window down so you can get inside to open the frunk using the emergency cable release.

Its interesting how many people don't want OTAs.

I always appreciate the pushing of improvements and extra features, especially at no charge.

OTAs are not perfect, though growing up in the 80s where all tech required some finesse I'm often surprised at how well things do work now without assistance. At least with OTAs no one has to edit a boot file.

That approach may work for awhile, but at some point down the road, you may end up with problems due to out-of-date software defects.
