So I have had my 2024 HTC for 3 weeks now. Experimenting with Google Maps leaves me wishing for the old NAV system.
At first, I like the crisp display but all the writing for street names is very tiny.
So I zoom-in so I can read the names. But after a short period, the display automatically goes back to the tiny writing with a large area shown.
On my 2017, I could set the zoom/display level and it stayed at the selection.
I looked for a Google-Maps setting on the 2024-C8 but found none.
Is there a way to set the zoom level?
I haven't used Google-Maps yet as a guide. Does it work better when it is guiding you?
I like to read street names, especially the streets crossing the current street I am driving on.
Not impressed with Google-Maps on the C8.
My Honda always displays the current street/highway I am on. If I turn on NAV, I can see the other street names in the vicinity.

Am I doing something wrong, missing something?
This is a usual/typical Google Maps behavior. Happens on a phone as well. Also on Android Auto. Frustrating indeed. One of my biggest issues, personally, with Google Maps.
Google maps sucks. There is no travel direction "up" screen orientation. Google maps used to have this functionality, but they removed it. Zoom function is, as noted, bizarre in its behavior. Waze (which Google owns but did not create) is far better. Is Waze available on the 2024 "Play store"? Is there a Play Store available on the screen? Is the 2024 C8 running Android Automotive 12?

Have you tried tapping the "compass" button? This is how you change the orientation between north and vehicle direction to the top on normal Google Maps.

I've had no issues using with google maps for nav at all and find it easy to use on my '23....

II don't have a 2024 C8. Mine is a 2020. I do have a Cadillac LYRIQ that runs Android Automotive 12 and the Google maps on that does not allow a direction of travel "up" view. Hence my questions about the 2024 C8. "Normal" Google maps is not the issue. Google maps on Android Automotive (not Android Auto - two very different things) is the question here.

Google maps using Android Auto is not the issue. The issue is the native Google Maps app on Android Automotive which is NOT Android Auto. Your '23 does not have Android Automotive.

You have Android Auto, not Android Automotive, two totally different things. And yes, you're Google Maps on Android Auto does have a direction of travel up function. Again, tap the compass icon on the GMaps screen, it switch between north at the top and direction of travel. I have a 2016 Caddy ELR, 2021 Jeep GC, and 2023 C8 SR and on 3 different Android phones all three vehicles have this function.
I think it's a Google maps thing, regardless inf on Auto or Automotive. It's also a problem if you are working on a phone or on a desktop. The street names are auto zooming. With my old eyes, I have a problem with GMaps on the phone.

Google Maps does auto zoom, zooming out when you're going faster, zooming in when you go slower or approach a direction change. I've not found it to be an issue, because at higher speeds I'm not really looking at cross streets anyway.
Can't address Android Automotive, but on my phone or in AA it always displays travel direction up.

But you can still use Android Auto (and Carplay) on the 2024 C8. Not sure about other GM vehicles with Android Automotive.

Exactly. I've been using Android Auto since ~2016, and will continue using it in my new 2024 Z06. I'll play with the Android Automotive, but doubt that I'll switch to it as doing running AA from my phone keeps all my nav, music, etc in one place (instead of having to configure both on the phone and the car), and also keeps a consistent interface across all my vehicles.
I am very used to Android Auto and find it easier. I've been using it exclusively for almost 7 years, in multiple vehicles (Chevrolet, Mazda, BMW, Ford, both wired and wireless). That said, if you are running the built in system, you can have two apps showing at the same time on the split home screen. For example, Maps and Sirius XM. If you are using Android Auto, you can also have a split screen but all apps will have to run both in the Android Auto shell.

No, you are 100% wrong. My 2023 LYRIQ got an OTA update a few weeks ago that brought it up to Android Automotive 12. I do not have and I have never had Android Auto. My mobile phone is an Apple, so I use Apple CarPlay in my 2020 C8. I have used CarPlay in my LYRIQ and when I got the update from Android Automotive 11 to Android Automotive 12 I installed the Google Maps app on the LYRIQ (not on my phone).
