Purchased key and fob for #3 Keyfob for !my 2024 Corvette. Self programming option no longer in car menu! Took car into dealer service and their usual method of programming killed car electronics! Roving Corvette tech came in a few days later and restored original keys and car electronics. No #3 Fob. New software needs to be written? Anyone else with this issue?

 

Why do you need 3 FOBs?

 

Always travel with 2 keys. Leave 3rd home. A C8 acquaintances wife drove Vette to LA. She "misplaced" key and discovered car could not easily be moved. Car towed to dealer and she discovered that a missing key can be a problem. Much cheaper to drive from Bay Area to LA with spare key which husband did.

2024 Corvettes seem to have a software issue in this area.

 

How many keys can be programmed into the 2024 C8? I usually want four keys per car (2 spares!!) and always drive with 2 on a trip. I learned my lesson long ago and never again will be far from home with only one key. It only takes one time for a misplaced keyfob and this to become a nightmare.

The Shelbys allowed four remote keyfobs and 4 additional keys that only allowed door unlocks and engine starting. How many does the 2024 C8 allow and if the owner can't program it and a aftermarket automotive tool do it?

Here's the catch on the Fords....you needed two keys to program another yourself so if you lost one before you bought a third you are now stuck using Ford or an automotive locksmith to get any new keys into the system...expensive mistake.

 

I remember reading 24's have to be dealer programmed or maybe you had to have both the original keys to do a self program. Something about the 24's is different. Where's Andy?

 

The ability to program a third fob yourself was removed, I think, with the 2023 MY cars. If the dealer couldn't program a third without killing the car, they didn't know what they were doing. Find a dealer that has a competent service department.

 

Are you saying there is a way to program another fob yourself if you have a 2022 model? I was looking into having a 3rd at home also just in case but hadnt found anything yet.

 

Its possible that if you ever had your car in for service in 2024 that the BCM would be updated to 2024 OSID levels. That most likely would then put your pre-24 car up to the 24 software which appears to have no ability to program your own FOB DIY. I have always said sometimes an update is not a good update to a software package in a car. GM can remove and add features all they want without your consent.

 

IIRC, the owner's manual has instructions to program a 3rd fob for 22 and earlier. You need BOTH the original fobs, and a brand new, never programmed 3rd fob. You can't reprogram a previously used fob yourself.

As vette 388 says, it's possible an update could have removed that feature, but I think it's unlikely. Only one way to find out for sure.

Okay...so only a dealer can add a third keyfob and it requires him to reprogram all the keys. In other words it sounds like the BCM key info is wiped and reloaded as if new with all the keys needed to be present for reprogramming. .Doesn't make sense to not allow a third to be programmed by the owner if he already has two keys present. Just another way to allow dealers to scam owners out of a lot of money. Corrupt backward states like NY are probably in on it since it logically makes no sense and definitely does not create any additional securty. I'll search to see if there is any company that can duplicate the characteristics of any existing C8 keyfob such that the car can't tell the difference between the spare and the original. . .

 

I don't think that's correct, least not for pre-2024 cars. Anything might have changed for 2024. But before that, if you have 2 original keys, the dealer should be able to add a third key without reprogramming the original 2. Actually, even if you only have one original key, the dealer can do that, but the new one is still going to be #3. The only way to program a new fob as #1 or #2 is to reprogram the BCM and all the fobs.

 

I have a 2024 and I think it basically eliminated the option for the car owner to add another key without the dealer repropgramming the ecm...either by adding another key or clearing and re-adding all the keys back in. Either way they took the car owner out of the picture and now it requires $$$ for no valid reason other than to make a buck!
