This was really a fun project and i want to thank everyone for their great comments!! I was in a quandary trying to decide on a design.I was tempted to just shell out $450 on a store bought cover but I actually couldn’t find any I really liked There are tons of pictures with great designs and it just comes down to personal taste…they are all great!! Many of you sent me personal questions on the specifics of the cover…I’m fortunate to have a new C8 with a pristine cover to start. I knew I wanted red but not with the intensity of Torch Red or even Edge Red. I saw some colors I really liked and purchased three on Amazon….Dupli-Color Barcelona Red Metallic, Dupli-Color Toreador Red and Dupli-Color Metal Specks. I sprayed all on a board first and decided on the Toreador Red. It just seemed to have a deep rich color that didn’t fight with the edge red valve covers. Several of you guys placed C8 Emblem Front Bumper Logos along with a Commemorative Duntov Coin which I really liked. I scrubbed the cover with a bristle brush and Dawn Detergent to get any grease or film removed. I spent quite a lot of time masking the metal with tape. I wanted to retain the metal look. Placed three coats of Duplicolor Primer Spray after masking. I kept the spray about 6-8in from the surface and for the first coat went back and forth longitudinally with very light application. The second coat went side to side with alittle more concentration. The final coat was about 12in back with a light mist. This really covered to perfection. I left this to cure overnight. I placed the Toreador the next day using the same strokes. Left this cure overnight. The next day I put a light coat of DupliColor BCL0125 Clear Exact Match Coat….cured for about 3 hours and then really wet it down with a second clear coat. I sanded the stock emblem with 220 sandpaper to make sure it was flush with the cover along with the coin. Forgot to mention that I blocked out the screw holes with tape so I wouldn’t mess up the threads. I removed the tape and placed the emblem and coin. I initially was going to paint the letters by hand using Testor’s Black paint but decided to order Stenciled decals for a more professional look. Any questions guys please contact me…Dr Bob
LOL…..yes and no….I didn’t want the Edge or Torch Red color even tho it would have matched the valve colors. When I sampled the Toreodor I really liked it especially thru the see thru hatch. Personally I thought it looked richer. With the hatch closed this is the predominant color.
