Default Onstar plan for 2024 C8 Navigation

Just a heads up, I want to ask whoever on the forum has signed up for OnStar. I don’t want to discuss why I should not have it and use the phone instead. I hate using navigation on the phone or Apple CarPlay, so I always rely on the navigation in my car.
I think I saw some posts about what plan to get before but can’t find them again. Just want to clarify, do I need to sign up for app access or connected vehicle at minimum for navigation to work? I think someone also said that we would get a discount due to overlap, am I correct?

You can go to the OnStar website and see the various plans and costs.

I checked the website but I don’t understand do I need navigation or data since App Access include Connected Navigation.

I agree it is not that clear. I think, but I am not certain, that all you need is a data plan, or a plan that provides data. The "connected vehicle plan" appears to offer that. But forum members have reported better prices than found at the website by calling. Could be a cheaper plan too.

If you check you window sticker, you will notice that you were charged $300 for 3 years of Onstar.

My 2024 is now 5 months old and I am able to use Waze, Google Maps, Sirius etc without a data plan or using my phone as a hot spot.

Since my garage is also where my computer equipment is located and has the router there and when my car is in the garage it is connected via Wi-Fi through my router. Since my car is connected to my house router, I have to pull out of my driveway (300' long) before the OnStar data connects and disconnects from my house router. From then on, all works as it was designed to do.

OnStar is designed to communicate via WiFi when it is connected to an internet enabled network, such as you home network, and via the 4g cellular network when it is not connected via WiFi. Either way, it can send and receive data. And either way, it can also receive OTA updates. Is that what you mean?

Also, are you saying that your built in Google based navigation system is continuing to function, using only the Remote Access Plan from OnStar? Based on others experience, and also based on the OnStar web site - the Remote Access Plan does not include a data plan - but one can be added on. Are you perhaps downloading map data while connected to your network.

I'm not disputing your experience by any means. But its different from what other member have reported.

Attached is a clip from the window sticker showing that the include plan is the "Remote Access Plan", and a clip appearing to show a data plan is not included with that.

But, that alone does not include the data plan that the manual says is required for the built in nav to work, does it? I'm asking because the OnStar site appears to say it does not include a data plan.

Yep, the data plan would be added at an incremental cost....

I saw you posted the remote access cost and just wanted to let others know that it could be had for almost half of that through negotiation...

Per the Chevrolet website, when I browse the Onstar plans for my 2024, AppAccess is the lowest cost on ($14.99/mo) that fully supports “Google Built-In”. This is what I’ll be switching to when my extra 2 months of Premium trial runs out. If you want to add WiFi hotspot and unlimited data, you’d want the Connected Vehicle plan.

I see that. To me it is unclear that the AppAccess includes a data plan necessary to support the Google based on board navigation system. There are some footnotes next to the Maps and Connected Navigation features that appear to indicate something additional is requires. If I was considering this, I would call OnStar to find out exactly the plan required.

Andybump,

I agree with all that you are saying and I took that info as the gospel and so that I switched to my mobile phone hot spot after 30 trial should have run out. I forgot to activate my hot spot one day and as soon as I got clear of my home WI-FI, Waze (my preferred nav system) started working, so I tried Google nav built in and it was working as well as Sirius (which for 2024 runs on W-Fi rather than a sat receiver) and all was working. I have done this every time I go out now and it works..

BTW, I encourage everyone to unsubscribe from the "Connected Car" system via your My GM App.

I will let everyone know if this changes. It shouldn't be working I agree, but it is.

On the Chevrolet site, it specifically calls out that AppAacess supports Google based systems.

What's the deal with the Connected Car thing? I think my dealer got me registered, but I honestly don't know much about it... If there was a way to turn everything OFF I would! Too tech heavy for this Old School guy...

I see no $300 OnStar charge on my 2024 sticker.

Is it still working? I found this that says after the subscription runs out, it will work for a while using previously downloaded maps before the maps are automatically deleted. Its found herre

I’ll pick up my car today. I don’t know can I negotiate with them about onstar, if not I might call onstar myself. My dealer actually can’t answer the questions either because my salesman still believe that navigation don’t need onstar.
