Default Dumb question

So I picked up my courtesy delivery c8 from a dealer in California which was sent from MacMulkin. I payed all the taxes and registration fees when I got there to pick up the car but I forgot to ask about the title information and registration. Is all of that sent by mail or should I have gotten the registration and/or title at the dealer?

Welcome to the forum, congratulations on your first post, no dumb questions here, we are all here to help, that's what this community is for, it serves as a wealth of information.

If you financed the car, the bank would receive and hold the title. MacMulkin will send you the paperwork you need to get the registration at the BMV, this sometimes takes 7-10 days, you should already have temporary plates and 30 days to get it registered. Enjoy!

i payed it completely off with MacMulkin and only payed the registration, taxes and dealer fee with the CD dealer. I’m guessing the DMV would mail the title and registration at some later date?

I'd give MacMulkin a call & ask them to give you a status update on your paperwork

It will take upwards of 30 days to get your paperwork from the state. That’s the reason for the temp license plate. Sam

Since vehicle was purchased out of state, Peoples Republic of California will require a smog certification prior to issuing registration and or title....just sayin

Just contact MacMulkin as they will certainly have more knowledge of your situation than anyone on this forum. You probably already know how accommodating they are.

If the car was ordered with CA emissions then no smog is required….I think the code was Y99? If not, then there is a process to get the O2 sensor to register, which never worked for me, and instead I monitored the O2 “ready” signal with an OBDII monitor. It took exactly 700 miles. Then off to the smog station for a quick PASS.

It was the two trips to DMV which were the real pain….hours each time as back in 2021 you couldn’t make an appointment for a vehicle inspection.

If the car was purchased out of state but a courtesy delivery was performed by a California dealer then a separate smog certificate won't be required.

If the car was purchased out of state with all the required emissions but the paperwork wasn't processed by a California dealer then a separate smog certificate will be required. However a smog referee station (not test/inspection station) can verify the paperwork and provide a certification without requiring an actual test.

Back in 21, the referee was a last option if your temporary registration ran out of time (you were able to get a 30 day extension), but you had to go through the pain of the DMV. So if that’s changed then this communist state actually did something to make common sense.

License plates and registration stickers etc will come from the state. Don't bother asking MacMulkin since they are not a party to that aspect of the transaction.

Forget this comrade's advice. New vehicle could not be delivered by a dealer if it were not smog compliant, along with the underhood sticker stating CARB approved. You will not require a smog inspection.

MacMulkin can sure tell OP if/when all documentation was sent to CA as he purchased the C8 from MacMulkin. That's the best place to start IMO, prior to contacting CA dealer and DMV.
No one here is going to be able to tell him where he stands in the process.

This was a courtesy delivery. Like mine, the buyer paid the delivering dealer in California the sales tax and registration fees, as if the car was bought from that dealer. The delivering dealer sent the documentation to the state, not MacMulkin. That part of the transaction had nothing to do with MacMulkin. There is no reason to contact any dealer. As explained to the buyer on the forum, the paperwork will arrive in the mail within a month. Not a huge mystery and case closed...

Assuming they did electronic filing, which they likely did and there would be a line item on the paperwork with the associated fee, the California dealer would be unable to complete the paperwork if they didn't have the necessary documentation from MacMulkin. All of the "paperwork" processing is done by the dealer doing the courtesy delivery in California and most, if not all of it, is electronic.

My understanding is that if you purchase the car with the RPO California Smog option, it doesn't have to be smog inspected as part of the California registration process. McMulkin ordered my car with the California RPO smog option. They very likely ordered your car also with this RPO. All Corvettes come with a 50 state smog compliance statement. However, my understanding is that if you do not have the California RPO smog option, then it needs a California smog inspection.
.........................
I ordered my car from McMulkin with an October 2024 museum delivery. I had to make two trips to the DMV. One trip, prior to picking up the car in Kentucky, for a temporary registration and one trip, after delivery with the car in my possession, to complete the registration. The desk clerk at the first trip didn't know how,,,,or didn't want .....to issue a temporary registration for a car In Kentucky...even though McMulkin sent all the proper paperwork. The desk clerk had to fetch a higher up to come and tell her to complete the temporary registration. The DMV would not give me a paper tag.....all they would give me was a 5 inch square red window sticker which they said would allow me to drive back to California. Later I decided I didn't want to drive from Kentucky to California with no tags on the car, so I talked about this with McMulkin and they sent me a New Hampshire temporary paper tag! Back home with the car, I went to complete the registration....the DMV has to look at a physically present car. A problem came up when they want a smog inspection...me telling them and showing them the car had the RPO California smog option fell on deaf ears, so rather than fight them, I just drove to a smog station, paid $60, drove back to the DMV and to complete the registration. By this time I had about a 3/8 inch stack of papers dating back to my temporary registration...the clerk went through the entire stack line by line looking for something wrong, I suppose to deny giving me my registration. She couldn't find anything to complain about so I got my registration. All my paperwork from McMulkin came promptly by courier air mail.

On an unrelated matter l spent an hour on the phone yesterday with the DMV online assistance. Pretty emotionally drained after that hour. I really hate to think that we might someday have socialized medicine where we have to deal with a DMV for our health care.

"I’m guessing..." This is nothing to be guessing about! Get on the phone as suggested, and if necessary physically go by your courtesy dealer and the DMV.
