Telescoping magnet has saved the day a few times for me over the years. Go to Harbor Freight they have several styles to choose from and the price is right!
Nothing strange or unusual here. I think that most of use have had this happen at some time or another if we touch tools. I have had this happen many times over the years...even after telling myself "better be careful"....then the word "sh*t" is next. The magnetic stick will work if you can see the socket. Good luck.
I dropped a combo wrench under the hood of my '04 Ford Lightning. It landed on a crossmember. I could hear it, I could see part of it, but no magnets or grabbers worked.
I tossed two pieces of 4x4 in the back and my son and I went to the playground parking lot. I just drove back and forth over the 4x4's at moderate (but not fun with low profiles) speeds until he gave me the thumbs up.
I'm not sure where the lost tool is, so if a commercially available magnet tool won't work, bend and such to get were needed, find a small magnet that can be attached (how depends on the particular magnet) to a piece of strong yarn and go from there. I've found such can "drop" into problematic areas the same as the offending socket or whatever. All the best.
