Used 3 temperature sensors on the stock engine cover. During normal driving, top up, (around 80 degrees outside) temps on all three were just under 100. But when parked the temps quickly rose to almost 140 on the sides(over the exhaust) but was 15 degrees cooler in the middle. Sounds like it would a good practice with a HTC to raise the top when you park.
I think if the top is black or dark, on a hot day in the sunlight, the surface temperature can get way hotter than 140 degrees. The interior of a car can get to 140 degrees, and the temperature of surfaces in a closed car can get much much hotter.
OP are you measuring the siurface temps of the engine bay cover, or the ambient air temperature? Wonder what the surface temps of the headliner and top are under the same conditions.
A '20 and I used a temp stick to measure temps in the trunk of my coupe. Temps would go up 60 degrees. Installed the TKO insulation kit in the trunk and cut 40 degrees off of the temp rise

The probes I used were taped to the top of the engine cover.
