Is there any advantages to having a permanent air filter installed over the OEM filter. Not a race car just regular driving. If so what can anyone share to the advantage. Trying to justify the cost of 180. What brand is everyone using?
the stock ac delco air filter costs about $40-50 to replace. the attack blu reusable air filter costs any where from $125-150. in the long run the reusable filter will cost less, but it does require shorter service intervals to wash the filter.
I just bought and installed the attack blue air filter. They claim 9-11 whp, but I'm highly skeptical about that. Maybe 3-4 at the very best, but I knew this going in. I'm not a mechanic, but I watched some youtube videos and I was able to change out the air filter in about 45 minutes.
I'm not going to get into the claims/filtration ability/etc., just my personal experience with my C5. Changed out the original paper filter for an oiled media filter. Cleaned/oiled filter annually (about 18000 miles), once got a bit too much oil and fouled the MAF. Cleaned up the MAF, never made that mistake again.
Started getting my oil analyzed, and had fairly high silicon levels. Changed to a paper filter, and silicon levels trended back down to normal levels. Change the paper filter every 25-30k miles, never had a problem with high silicon levels again.
It's your engine so do what you want but the stock filter is better than any washable filter as far as trapping very small particles. Read post #5.
The fact that it's washable should be enough to tell you that it's only good for large particles. And 45 minutes to change a filter so you can clean it is not a simple job.
