Hi all. I am somewhat of a newbie here. While browsing on my Onstar account on my desktop. For my 2025 Z06. I came across this GM Insurance Driving Program. It says.... General Motors Insurance's Driving Program offers auto insurance discounts and savings through General Motors Insurance to eligible drivers based on smart driving behaviors. Also says. General Motors Insurance's Driving Program doesn't work with Location Services off. Visit your in-vehicle Settings screen, then select Privacy to manage Location Services.
As we know. In April 2024 GM dropped Onstar Smart Driver. They said they will phase it out over 2 months. What i don't like is this. When i looked up Onstar smart driver and this GM Insurance driving program. I came across this.....
General Motors Driving Insurance, on the other hand, is an insurance provider that may use data from OnStar (or other sources) to help determine rates, but it's not the same as OnStar Smart Driver itself. OnStar Smart Driver has since been discontinued.
May use data from Onstar or other sources to help determine rates. But it's not the same on Onstar Smart Driver? Sounds like the same to me. Maybe being new here. I'm missing something.
Just another means of big brother collecting all your data. Not for me! Probably not much of a discount. Always have been with NCM Insurance and no one has been able to beat there rates.
I just got off the phone with Onstar and that GM Insurance Program too. It's not available in all states yet. To opt out of it. Inside your car. Go to Settings, then System, then Privacy, then shut off Location Services if active. According to Onstar. This will not affect other location features you have with Onstar. Only the insurance. Whether location services is automatically set as default i forgot to ask.
GM has stopped sharing this data with information brokers and outside insurance companies, so it's only an issue if you use GM's insurance program. Knowing that they're tracking how you drive, why would anyone do that? But if you choose to, it's a choice you made, so no room to complain.
I wouldn't do this on a corvette, but do it on my truck that I don't tend to drive spiritedly. Worrying about your driving data and/or who "collects" it is just a waste. They have it regardless if you acknowledge it or not. And they don't care, it's just a piece of information they can use.
