I can't for the life of me figure out WHY the left side stalk (lights) is controlled by the **** you turn is at the end of the stalk, while the right side (wipers) is set with a barrel that's NOT on the end. Ergonomically it would make sense for the stalks to have identical actuations. This has bothered me since I got the car 4 years ago.
Can anyone give a reason?

Reason: I don't know my right from my left, so I changed those reference points.

No ideal. As long as everything works and is functional, I guess that's what matters even though it's not perfectly balanced like it should be or how you feel it should be.

Yeah, mine too,,,, I'm over 70 years old and still don't know my right from my left. .. That's why I referenced the funtions, not just the side they're on... I'll fix the original post.. THANX

Here's a guess: On some GM products, the end of the wiper stalk has an additional **** for a rear windshield wiper / washer. And the same interval wiper control is used on ALL GM cars whether they have rear wipers or not.
My wife's Mazda has a rear wiper washer that is as described above.

Now that's another interesting point. On American cars, wiper switch works exactly opposite to Japanese cars. (Don't know about German ones, .. Anybody?
That is up to turn on, up more to turn faster, vs down down. Also the intermittent function is marked with the shortest indicator lines on the control indicating for the longest times on American, (Ford and Chevy anyway) but longest indicating longest on Japanese.. ..
My X5 has lights on the left and wipers on the right. Pull the right stalk down and you get a single wipe. Push up auto mode. Lights stay on auto mode. They come on automatically if wipers are on.
