Mode Description Weather : Weather Mode is used
for slippery surfaces to help control
wheel speed. This can compromise
the acceleration on dry asphalt.
This feature is not intended for use
when the vehicle is stuck in sand,
mud, ice, snow, or gravel.
According to the Spring Mountain high performance driving school I attended last year, they recommend using weather mode in rainy or slippery conditions. We did a figure 8 on wet pavement, first in sport mode, then in weather mode. It's easy to spin out and lose control in sport mode if you accelerate around the curves. But you can't spin out in weather mode even if you try. The engine cuts power to the rear wheels. When it's raining, I turn on weather mode for safety reasons.
No one has yet answered the original question. What modifications to the car are caused by changing to weather mode?
The traction control nannies go full on.
The car has sensors that detect if the direction of travel matches that of the steering wheel angle. Also the ABS system detects when wheel speeds match. The eLSD looks at the slip in the rear wheels comparing it side to side, giving traction to the appropriate wheel... All this data is fed into the computer(s) and in Weather mode the interventions are maxed out to prevent loss of traction and do vector control, to keep the car headed in the direction the steering wheel points. It does this (I think) the braking on individual wheels as needed, especially for non eLSD equipped cars as well as torque limiting of the engine.
"Weather Mode" simply eliminates wheel spin by limiting or reducing the torque applied during acceleration.
I also did Spring Mountain and the weather mode works perfectly, as it is designed to do.
In slippery or reduced traction conditions, the cars tires will not spin when applying throttle, .making it very stable and predictable as well as safer..
They even put bald or well used tires on the cars for the test and they do not spin when you apply throttle.
yes, it works and use it if you need it.

Exactly! The figure-8 demo at Spring Mountain was very informative and it was amazing how the car performed on a slick surface.
I was in the hardest rain I've seen in years yesterday and the car was all over the road slowing down kept the sliding at bay Weather Mode didn't seem to help
I want to thank the members that responded suggesting that reading the manual would have answered my questions but where else could I get such informed comments
My Weather Tech floor mats did their usual great job

Just think how bad it could have been WITHOUT Weather Mode. These are big fat tires tho and weather mode can't stop hydroplaning. They still need contact with pavement.
Lots of very informed people who just want to help. Mostly. I learn something from the community almost every day.
Weather Mode, combined with AWD, allows me to drive my E-Ray in heavy rain with 345 wide rear tires with total confidence! Have put 50% more miles on my E-Ray in the 1st year than my 2020 C8 Z51! Like my prior Vettes it's my DD. Have to wash it more BUT great fun (even in rainy weather!) SIDEBAR
Was concerned when I had to drive my E-Ray the first time, leaving the dealer when they finished the PDI. it was raining Cats and Dogs. Wipers going full speed the whole ~50 miles taking back roads to avoid traffic. Hit puddles that had water coming up as high as the fenders. Had my 2017 Grand Sport rear, even in Weather Mode, slide out in rain. It only had 335 rear tires. What would these 345 rear and 275 front tires be like? And I have ZER Option Summer tires NOT the standard All Season.
Not once did the car slide or feel out of control. I was amazed. When I got home, told my wife how great it was in the rain compared to my prior 6 Vettes. Now where I would take her AWD SUV when raining or when in hot summers with the treat of thunderstorms (we have all the time in NE SC) if I mention taking her SUV she says take the Vette and get it dirty. I DO!

One issue is how many miles do you have on the tires? Had a scary experience years ago with wide tires hydroplaning from one side of a 3 lane highway to the other, car thankfully came out unscathed. I promised never again. The first tire wear bar that appears anywhere in the tread it's new tires. Even before. As the tire wears, rain performance, especially heavy rain decreases. One bad hydroplaning incident costs far more than new tires.
If driving in Rain, Smart to get new tires when in Yellow Area
I actually heard someone at a local car show mention that the "Weather Mode" option on his shiny new C8 Z06 reduces water intrusion to the mid-engine compartment, I tried not to laugh as I was walking away....
