Apps

There are a few apps that can be directly added to the earlier cars OS through the apps menu on the car but the selection is very small.
I use an Android phone with Android Auto but Android Auto only allows a small subset of Android apps to be used with Android Auto. I'm not familiar with iPhones but I assume they also limit what apps can be accessed through CarPlay. I use a CarPlay AI box with my C8. It allows me to project nearly any Android app on the infotainment screen.

As noted, when you use CarPlay, the "app", such as Waze, is running on your phone, but it will provide a display and controls on your infotainment system display. Even so, it won't run just any old app on your phone - it will only do that with supported apps. But, when using Carplay you are not downloading and hosting the app itself in your car infotainment system.
But the 2020-2023 models do support other apps that can be downloaded and hosted in the infotainment system. There is a menu choice for apps, and then "my apps" . And it shows a bunch of apps. My 2021 shows Spotify, Alexa, AudioBooks, HeartRadio, Pandora, etc. I'm guessing you already are familiar with those and are wondering if other apps can be downloaded and hosted in the infotainment system that are not currently listed. I don't see a way to do that - and could find nothing in the manual that says that. Apps that are hosted in your infotainment system that require internet access to work, such as Pandora, will also require a data plan via OnStar (I don't do that) - or maybe a workaround.
The 2024 and on manual seems to also say that apps can be downloaded (not to be confused with using Carplay which it also still supports). But I don't see any detail on how to do that in the 2024 manual.
I attached some photos of menu items and "apps" that appear in the infotainment system in my 2021. Note the car is calling them apps.
