So....... the new LS6 6.7-liter engine being proposed for the 2027 model year just happens to convert to 409 cubic inches. I wonder which GM engineer had Beach Boys music playing while he designed the new motor. Old folks like me that remember the original 409 engine will be on the waiting list to get the new Vette.
I’ve had 409s over the years and they were what was available back in the day. So I guess it has a nostalgic ring to it. But I’d bet that very few who know the 409 would want it associated with their new Corvette. It was never meant to be a sports car engine, actually anything but.
The 409 introduced in '61 as an upgrade to the '58 348 that was originally a truck engine. Never meant to be a sports car engine but was a hit on the drag circuit. The 409 was what got Ronnie Sox and Buddy Martin together.
I'm no Chevy expert, despite buying a C8, but even I know the 409 was no Corvette motor. So I certainly wouldn't be looking to the song for heritage validation.
As has been mentioned, it was a heavy unit for full size cars and trucks.
Hopefully, Zora Arkus-Duntov would have prevented it ending up in the C2.
More to the point about the LS6's arrival, would anyone here be concerned about buying a first year engine in what is already a complex car?
Hagerty claims the new LS6 will be offered in the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport model. Aluminum block, normally aspirated wit 525 plus hp. Let's see what the Corvette wizards finally come up with.

This new engine will likely not appear in only the Grand Sport model/package alone, that would be too cost prohibitive. It will be in the Stingray (and E-Ray, if it remains in the line up) as well.
Honestly, I’d most likely sell my ’26 at some point to move into the LS6. That said, I wouldn’t jump in right away. I’d probably wait until around ’28 or ’29 to let them fully release it, work out any early bugs, and address the typical first-run issues before making the switch.

Could be a good decision. While I hope the new engine would be reliable, you just never know with a complex vehicle like the C8.
