Default DCT issue

Forgive the question. I know it’s been asked countless times but I’m at a dealer about to purchase a 2020 Stingray 3LT with 20K miles. Transmission service has been performed at 7K and 15K. The car drives fine. It doesn’t seem to have any transmission issue. What’s the likelihood the transmission issue may crop up? I know it’s like anything I.e. anything can happen with used cars. Should I purchase an extended warranty. Since it’s out of 5/60 GM warranty and I’m at a Land Rover dealer I’m at their mercy for warranty products.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks!

Odds are in your favor. Maybe you can get a 1 year BMB from the dealer.
At 20k miles, the car has been proven good.
It should have had the fluid changed twice now.

I wouldnt buy their aftermarket....not sure if gmpp csn be added that far after.

Chances are at this point car is good so I wouldn't stress too much about the DCT hobrstly....seems like most issues happen under 10k miles.

What exact services were performed and when were they performed (in time)? There are no specific 7k and 15k transmission services. The filter needs to be change between 7000-8000 miles regardless if done earlier, then at 22,500 miles on the odometer. The fluid needs to be change at least every three years.

As for the warranty, you will need to shop around. The Chevrolet.com website clearly states that the Chevrolet Platinum Protection plan may be added any time within 8 years or 100k miles. The trick is who sells it, how much will it cost, and will it require an inspection. There is an ongoing thread about this. One of the forum vendors Dennis Fichtner can sell an out of warranty plan but its expensive and may require and inspection. Another forum member reported getting a slightly 32% lower price than Dennis quoted when the inspection cost was included, for a 4/40 plan, 2894 vs 4256 per @Stoopalini on the direct website, and no inspection. But the prices are very high - and deserve some thought about cost vs risk involved.

Transmission failure are not as often as they may seem from forum discussion. But they do happen, and when they do, the can be expensive.

You can get a quote here for an out of warranty situation. But I suggest checking around.

https://mychevroletprotection.com/ve...ice-protection

You can contact Dennis by email and ask for quote. Prepare to be shocked.

I would disagree with that. 20k without failure doesn't guarantee anything. No clue how the car was driven, if the fluid flush was done properly, etc... Doesn't mean he shouldn't buy the car. I would just see what good warranty possibilities are out there. Buy it with the belief it'll be fine, with the understanding that the DCT is an Achilles heel for the C8 so just be understanding that it "could" happen.

Not sure I would say it was slightly cheaper ... LOL

A 4yr / 40k mile Platinum plan cost me $2894 when I purchased it direct from the website.
Dennis' quote was $3856 and required a $400 local dealer inspection ... so $4256 total.

$4256 - $2894 = $1362. That makes it 47% more expensive if I had purchased from Dennis instead of the website. I wouldn't classify that as slightly

@luponem Like Andy said, contact Dennis for a quote and call your local dealer to see how much they'll charge for the inspection Dennis requires. Add the two together for the total price to buy from Dennis.

May as well ask your local dealer if they can sell you a Chevrolet Protection Plan while you're talking to them. Don't let them trick you into a different extended warranty product though ... I'd say Chevy Protection Plan or nothing.

Then also plug your VIN into the website (Andy linked above) and see what the quote is there. I called the phone number on the website and asked them if a vehicle inspection was required when I was purchasing .... they told me no, it is not required. But my vehicle was still covered by the manufacturer's 5yr/60k mile powertrain warranty; I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. So you may call them and ask. If you do, please come back and let us know. It would be helpful for the forum to know if the inspection requirement is impacted by the 5/60 powertrain warranty or not.

All of these purchase paths for the Chevrolet Protection Plan (CPP) will result in the exact same coverage, so the cheapest path is the best path.

I just caught this comment:

You are absolutely NOT at their mercy for warranty products. Buy the car if you like it, and you can add a protection plan after the sale. You do NOT need the selling dealer to do anything except sell you the car

You can add a GM backed Chevrolet Protection Plan to any Chevy vehicle which is less than 8 years old and has less than 100k miles. No need for the Land Rover dealer to do anything.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I went to the Chevrolet Protection Plan website and here's what it provided.

(again, this is a 2020 Stingray Convertible 3LT with 20,989 miles).

2yr/24,000, zero deductible, $3026 ($2,796 with $100 deductible)
3yr/36,000, zero deductible, $4902 ($4,442 with $100 deductible)

Duplicating this build in 2026 would raise MSRP to ~$102K.

Yeah, being 6 years old with 20k miles is hurting the protection plan price. You can try Dennis, but he'll most likely be $1k more than buying direct and you'll also need to pay for an inspection.

That car has been on the market for 22 days. It was initially listed at $67,777 on Jan 26th and they dropped it to $64k on Feb 9th. CarEdge seems to think you can get it for $61,788. Maybe you can negotiate down to cover a CPP plan if you're concerned about it?

I really like CarEdge, and found it very useful when I was shopping for a used C8. I think you can probably find a 2021 or newer for similar pricing though.

I purchased it for $61,500. Which was still more than I thought I should pay given all of the online resources (KBB, Edmunds, NADA, etc.). The sales manager "opened his books" and showed there was minimal profit; i.e. hundred of dollars vs thousands. That, and it was a one owner, locally owned (Central Florida) with a lot of maintenance records, and the dealer matched CarMax's offer for my trade. Given all of that, I pulled the trigger!

Thanks again, everyone, for all of your comments and insights. Very helpful!

One last picture of the interior!

That would depend on the "in service" date. My 2020 won't require its next DCT fluid change till this September.

I suggest to drive the car in Sport and tour mode and paddle shift up and down in each gear,
Ex. 6th to 5th, 5th to 4th, 4th to 3rd etc. and listen closely and feel each transition (audio off). try this at different speeds and you should get a good idea how smooth it should be.
A simple test drive is not enough, you really need to take several minutes and concentrate on the transmission operation.
Listen carefully and feel for any noise or "clunks", you should have a smooth and seamless transmission gear selection .
My transmission had a clunk and it is in the shop getting a new transmission and the car "runs" great.
If I had not have been paddle shifting, I would not have noticed it.
