... Everything went smoothly connecting Samsung S26 to infotainment display. Android Auto even works. Only issue is contacts didn't get downloaded. Contacts show up with AA, but not on info screen. Checked Bluetooth for my Chevrolet app and it lists only calls & audio. My other vehicle list calls, audio, and contacts for permission. Just not the my Chevrolet app. May not be a big deal because AA has my contacts. However if I use vehicle to call home , it has no idea since it's not stored in vehicle. What am I missing???? Is connecting phone to car better wired over wireless. Paired and re-paired several times. Ugh! Same thing makes u laugh could be same thing makes u cry. 🤔
This won't help you, but I've had the same problem in my 26 SR and 25 civic. For that reason I don't think its an issue with the car's software, I think its an AA issue. In my civic the contacts show rarely, just enough times to annoy me. The other 95% of the time the contacts list is empty.
On my 2020 the contacts get transferred to my car when I connect my phone to my car via Bluetooth, not Android Auto.
And the opposite is my dilemma. Paired phone to car via Bluetooth and never got option to transfer contacts. After pairing phone Android Auto kicked in . It's from Android Auto that I can use my contacts. Contacts are not loaded to vehicle. So when I go to AA i can use my contact list. If I go to vehicle display and look at phone there is no contact list.

A little too late to fire up vehicle, so I'll try this fix in the morning. Hope this can help you as well. Apparently this may be a phone software issue. New phone is when things went different. Anyway.... Go into developers options on phone (Google how on your device). Scroll down to more settings and look for Bluetooth PBAP. it's probably set to 1.2 version. Switch to 1.1 version (helpful with transfer in older infotainment systems). Remove phone from car & vehicle from phone. Now reinstall phone to car. Make sure Bluetooth is in scan mode. Fingers crossed! If this doesn't work I'll have to be content relying on just Android Auto to supply my contacts. *Advice given at your own risk 🧐
Sounds like a permissions issue more than a pairing problem. On your Samsung, go into Bluetooth settings → your car connection and make sure “Contacts sharing” is enabled (sometimes it doesn’t toggle on automatically).
Also check inside Android Auto settings, there’s a separate contact sync permission there too.
So the results are in. Finally contacted Samsung. According to them It's the software stupid. Never had contact download issues in previous phone. HOWEVER! Pairing the new phone the display asks do I want to ignore Android Auto. Of course like many , I said no. Hence the problem. AA software takes over permission for using contacts. That is why there's no tab for contact access in Bluetooth settings. AA is in control of contacts.Remedy... Temporarily do not accept AA and allow infotainment display to handle phone . Enable AA after initial set up. Whew! And I thought I'd have to revert back to using my black book (for people of a certain age reference) 😂

That option is probably now like that to prevent people from inadvertently downloading their contacts to a rental car.
This could also be an issue with the new upgrade to Gemini in android phones. I have had all kinds of lag issues as well as issues with contacts whenever the upgrade was installed.

Agreed... seems like for every upgrade, it's two steps forward and one step back (compatibility with older apps)
