Default Temporary grill guards

Looking at getting a used C8 without grill guards. Plan on installing them when I get the car home, but need to drive it about 200 miles to get it home.

Is there anything I can do to temporarily protect the radiator other than driving carefully?

Wouldn't worry about it until you get home. You might be over thinking this.

Small amount of miles compared to the prior miles already on your odometer. Have 39K without grill guards, so far so good.

If it's used, it's already been driven without grill guards. How does the 200 miles compare to the current mileage on it?

The car has 2500 miles on it. Not sure if the owner did any highway driving.

Doesn't have to be highway driving to have something impact the A/C condenser/radiator fins. With 2500 existing miles your 200 miles are not that significant. You're definitely overthinking this.

Grill guards are absolutely unnecessary. You will be fine driving that 200 miles....or 20,000 miles without grill guards. Marketing for them sure is great though!

Default Overthinking or Underthinking?

Whether or not grill screen guards (as they are called in the Owner's Manual) are necessary or not depends on the "problem" one expects them to solve. Seems like when considering protection of that area, one should at least decide their goal for that. Then you can evaluate the urgency.

Are you trying to prevent damage that causes the exposed condensers to leak, and need to be replaced? That can happen, although its rare.I don't recall a post where that has happened to a C8, but it did happen to @jerryU on an an earlier model Corvette.

Are you trying to prevent the condenser surfaces from collecting/accumulated bugs? That does happen (to some) and there have been several examples of that. It can be extensive, though for most it is not. Cleaning bug debris directly from the condenser surfaces can be difficult.

Are you trying to prevent bending of the condenser surface fins? Some view this as cosmetic. But it is still "damage". Way back in 2020 Tadge pretty much acknowledged that this happens, and said that GM even tested it (no kidding) and found that the level of "damage" or "fin bending" was not sufficient to hurt anything. Hmm. Regardless, there have been plenty of posts illustrating the fin damage that occurs. And, the more you drive, the more it happens.

And, damaged or not, the condenser surfaces are pretty visible without grill screen guards, and in the opinion of some, not the most pleasing aspect of the car. The grill screen guards tend to make the condenser surfaces less visible, and in the opinion of some, look better then looking directly at the condenser surfaces. And by the way, if the car has been driven for a while and has some fin bending, adding the grill screen guards after the fact will also tend to cover that up (from a cosmetic point of view). Which would reduce the urgency of protecting the area for a "relatively brief" 200 mile drive, since its going to be covered up later with a grill screen guard.

So, if any of those reason resonate with the owner, by all means get them. I made my own - out of the smaller perforated aluminum hex mesh - back in 2021. Mine are externally mounted. Most mount behind the existing plastic mesh. There was no GM approved version when I made mine.

Most never install Grill Guards. I installed my Grill Guards soon after I got my C8 and I also have the Nova Stretch, I only use the Nova on Major highways traveling as it can help with rock chips and bugs, also protects radiators. Nova Stretch is not meant to be left on for long term as dirt can get under it and act like sandpaper with the slight movements of the Bra. I have no issues with the Bra and it's very easy to wash out after each trip and hang to let dry.
for you Just drive home and keep your distance. you might even take back roads and enjoy the drive.
Have fun.
