Default Z51 gearing for road course work

Tadge said yesterday that the Z51 shifts twice by the time it gets to 60 mph. That eliminates any usefulness of 2nd on the track. With 6th gear probably a top speed gear and 7th and 8th for gas mileage that leaves 3-4-5 for track work. They’re going to be spread out pretty far.

I normally only use 2 maybe 3 gears in the cars I have had on track anyways. I would suspect the gearing to keep the car in its powerhouse.

I think he actually said the base Stingray shifts twice on the way to 60. Not the Z51.

If the Z51 has more aggressive gearing then it would shift the same or more times compared to the non-z51 not less.

Guys you want lower gearing if the Z51 has to shift twice to 60 MPH so be it...at least the gearing is not super long like in a Porsche GT4...where you can stay in second gear all the time on the track....

The math was done in another thread, 3-4-5 will be very similar to current c6/c7 m7 cars 2-3-4 final ratios. It will be fine for track. With only 60ms b/w shifts, you should always be in the effective torque band for the engine.

Sucks that 6th is so tall.
Car is gonna fall flat on its face at 120 mph. Should be a rocket up to that point though.

Maybe not. The z51 has a really deep rear end. 5.17 or something crazy. Probably packaging, they went with higher gears and a deeper rear end. Like mentioned before should be comparable to the C7 over-all ratios.

AIUI the base model shifts once, Z51 shifts twice, going into 3rd right before 60.

Coincidentally that's pretty much the exact speed it traps at in the 1/4 mile. Planned? Seems like it.

Current car falls flat on face at 105, so 120 is better.

Current LT1 gearing makes 4th go from 105 to like 150. It's a miserable gear.

I had a GS Z07, 4th was miserable. Felt like taking a nap on a straight. Got a point by from a Civic Type R and it took forever to get around him. A frikkin Civic. He did have E85 though, we had a good laugh between sessions.

4th in the C8 Z51 looks great, tops out at 118. 5th tops out at 158 though, still a 40 mph span. I don’t get it. You’ll never see a Porsche with a 40 mph gap. I guess GM feels different.

Look at gt4 gearing. I guess not as bad but every gear is too long.

They’re track gears. Stink on the street but great for the track. Z51 is just the opposite. Car will be a rocket up to 118 with 4 gears(not 5, I corrected my previous post)but then will bog down.

The gearing difference between Z51 and non is like 0.18 which is next to nothing as that stuff goes. Anyone who coughs 5 grand expecting a much harder accelerating C8 is going to disappointed. You might get 0-60 a tenth of a second faster which is something that you will never feel and not worth talking about. Wait for the Z06 if a significantly faster car is what you are after.

Default top speed in first 6 gears

This is what i have come up with and it seems to match at least some of the speeds others are talking about

If the C8 gearing is anything like the C7, you will probably run out of traction and ********* before you run out of gears.... the torque curve on this car is pretty fat and flat.

GT4 gearing is tall and some do not like it. But for autocross it is also tall until you drive the snot out of it. If you can keep the speed up you can kick some butt. I have a few season wins at autocross with a GT4. Will see what the C8 does and as soon as mine has some smiles on it I will track the beast. Maybe not autocross at first, do not know yet. But for sure the stock tires/wheels will be saved for ?? Track will be on MPSC 2s. No desire to go to R comps. Maybe take the 3 season stock tires for rain days.

GT4 has a rep for tall gears, but look how close together they are after you get to 2nd:

Just perfect for the track.

Exactly you get it. The diff makes the difference.

C8 z51 6th is stronger than 5th on the C7 z51 because of the diff. That being said after 1st they are very close, but 4-5-6 are the old 3-4-5.
