It seems that lifter trays in LS engines are a poor design have been the source of problems. When they wear out, they allow the lifters to turn and get out of alignment with the cam. Once that happens, the lifters and cam are worn out in short order, and can even result in total engine failure. Does anyone know if the LT2 still uses lifter trays to keep the lifters aligned? If not, what type of system do they use?
the trays have a bad rap When you go to high lift cams and higher spring pressure and rev the snot out of the engine (like 7500 and up) the trays can crack and let the roller lifter spin and no bueno
my opinion is if you want to run those high rpms, use the right parts and go link bar. For lower rpms and sane spring pressures the trays rarely fail. Kinda the same issue with the LS7 dropping valves. It's pretty rare that it actually happens.
