Computer limiting performance without tire pressure sensors?
Little background, I race more than one of my Vettes. On my 2008 Z06, with multiple sets of wheels and no TPMS, after about 20-25 miles, the car would no longer let you turn off all of the track nannies. To solve this, I built a pressure canister and entombed the sensors and put in the back cubby hole in the hatch. Works like a champ.
Fast forward to my 2021 C8, I put my 2nd set of wheels (no TPMS) on the car on Friday. Drove to the track (25 minute ride), took about 12 1-mile laps on Saturday, and we had a course with an 1/8th mile straight launch before the turns began, thus making launch control applicable. Drove home Saturday and back to track on Sunday (same distance) and got 3 laps in without issues. So all along, I'm thinking Chevy finally fixed this annoying issue for people who race their cars.
On lap #4, launched, full rpm 1-2 shift, and then when it attempts the 2-3 shift, it hits what feels like a rev limiter at 5500 rpm. I give up the lap, go to the gas station to put 6 gallons in the car, and let it cool down. Upon return, the exact same thing happened. You can see that in the video.
Left the track thinking the worst, but then had a theory that maybe this had to do with the TPMS and after a certain distance, it's putting in this artificial limiter. On Monday, I put the daily wheels (with TPMS) back on and went and tested, and it was perfect! Granted, I only did one pull as I was light on time, and I need more validation on this, but has anyone experienced this as well? Any documentation on the limitations of the vehicle when sensors can't be found? TIA
TPMS can be a problem... It is my understanding that if you remove the TPMS from all your wheels, the system just sends a warning light, but does not act on bad TPMS data... my rule of thumb is don't put TPMS on you track car...
However, I have a C7, so they may have changed the software... but I'd Start by just removing them.
You are correct I have had the same issue . I just clear it with my autel scanner before a session .
If you run no tpms it’s fine and the dash will only show temps. last week I ran fully working tpms at vir not a single issue “
few weeks before that I ran all four on another set of rims but my passenger rear was just not working and I had to scan my car 4 times that day. So yeah it’s a thing.

Thanks for the reply! I knew I couldn't be the only one. So how does that scanner work if you are choosing to run without TPMS? ITS600, is that what I want?
P.S. Did another pull today with full TPMS and it's still perfect.
Well that sucks. I am planning to buy a set of 18 inch wheels with Goodyear 3Rs for the track. If I understand correctly, the car will not run properly if the extra set of wheels don’t have TP sensors in them?? What do people with multiple sets of tires do to solve this issue?
I've no idea if GM is limiting performance without a read from TPMS. But it seems a bit silly not to just include them in your track wheels as well. Buy another set of sensors and have them installed when you do the next track tire change. No tools are necessary; after a short drive the car will reset and use the new sensors.
