Default aFe Track Series intake has arrived

First thing I'll say is kudos to aFe to shipping this right away after I ordered it during their Presidents Day weekend sale, but not kudos to FedEx for letting it sit for 4 days before delivering it. The original plan was to install it this past weekend but that obviously didn't pan out.

Like every other part from aFe that I've ordered and used for the past 2 decades, the quality appears top-notch. The carbon fiber weave is beautiful too! One thing that really surprised me is how massive their enlarged airbox inlets are vs. stock! No reusing of stock components here either; 100% complete kit all the way from inlets up to the throttle body.

I'll get more pictures posted after the full unboxing and of course during & after install.

Very nice.

Yes, I hate Fed Ex in my area. They do the same thing every time.

But on the other end of the spectrum, I ordered the Corsa cats the same day as the intake and FedEx had those to me from OH to TX, then from TX to CA (SoCal Porting for ceramic coating) in the exact same amount of time. It's just become so hit or miss; frustrating to say the least.

The only components that the aFe intake reuses from the stock setup are the small airbox heatshields that protect it from the exhaust pipes, and of course the various sensors & antennas. Otherwise, nothing else is carried over.

it really is!

I 2nd your comments as well, I've run their products on numerous sports cars over the past 2+ decades and have never been disappointed or experienced a failure. They were the first to market for C7 intakes and every brand that came out after that were either a direct copy or took some major design cues from aFe's R&D work. I appreciate the fact they put in a serious amount of time both on the dyno and flowbench before finalizing the design and coming to market.

Can you do a before and after dyno to see if this ends up just being a cosmetic mod?

I'll see what I can do. I'll likely install it the weekend of March 12th due to some upcoming travel.

Install weekend is upon us! I'm about halfway done after leaving work once the markets closed but shut it down for the night once the wife got home from work. I'll wrap it up tomorrow morning...I have the stock box out and the new box ready to go in, but I have a few more things to do before I'm ready to install it.

AFE includes new airbox inlets which are enlarged vs. stock, which I then further enlarged with my Dremel to truly maximize the space available. Using them as templates, I've traced what I need to enlarge on the body of the car, which will be task #1 tomorrow morning. Once that is done, the new box & filters go in!

I'll take a few pictures of the enlarged body openings tomorrow, but I'm estimating at least a 25% increase in size vs. the stock openings. I'll add a thin layer of RTV to ensure a complete seal in place of the factory foam gaskets which are glued to the stock inlets.

He really sings now!!! I wrapped up the install this morning with no surprises to report. Things went exactly as AFE's printed instructions and YouTube video instructions said they would. Fitment was frankly flawless with everything going together exactly as it should with no tweaks needed. I have about 10 miles on so far and no errors or lights to report. More air is definitely being inhaled!

Below you'll find pictures of how much I enlarged the air inlets vs. stock. The inner line is the AFE inlets out of the box and the outer line is how far I further enlarged the AFE inlets. Opening things up was a breeze using a Dremel w/grinding stone and took only minutes. I sealed things up with a thin layer of gray sensor-safe RTV.

Couldn't be happier with the install and full system! Next up, Corsa high-flow sport cats and that'll likely be it for my build...

This might be out in left field. I’d like to see an intake that removes the big enclosed casing. Therefore you’d have a single pipe coming out of the throttle body, then splitting off in each direction extended as far as it may similar to a true cold air intake. Similar to some Porsches I’ve seen. Even though you can’t see it when the rear trunk cover is intact it sure would get direct air to the filters and clean up that particular area. Not sure about the overall effect longer tubing may or may not have.

Interesting idea! I could see it... Reminds me of the old school import true cold air intakes that put the air filter down into the front bumper, only your idea would put the filters into the rear fenders.

Their C7 intake is no different or better than any others that beat them to market years prior. They do not yet offer anything for the C8.

It's a beautiful day here today and I have 60+ miles on the intake now. Absolutely love it, really screams, sounds great, and pulls noticably harder as you near and surpass 100 MPH on the Dallas speedways AKA tollways! The extra airflow is paying off and making a difference.

Corsa cats will be installed with dyno runs in less than 2 weeks.

I'm going to let 21st Century do them. I was looking at them with the stock intake removed and just couldn't dig deep enough to find the motivation! I really should have since I was right there, but wanted to get the car back together and experience the intake alone rather than doing 2 parts at once.

Because I can't leave well enough alone...

Based on Paragon's intake dyno shootout test:

  • aFe Pro5R / 441 / 429
  • aFe ProDryS / 444 / 435
  • Halltech / 443 / 428
  • Corsa / 448 / 431
I've decided to swap my Pro5R filter out for aFe's DryFlowS filters. On top of that, I've ordered both the standard filters included with the C8 intake (part #21-91020-MA) and for an extra test an oversized pair (2x part #21-91057) that is 1" taller but overall similar in dimensions so they should fit fine. My quick math this morning puts these filters at roughly 15% more surface area.

My goal is to keep aFe's fat mid-range torque and gains throughout the curve from 2,200 to 6,500 RPM while gaining Corsa's additional top-end power (which only showed gains above 5k RPM). Rough eyeballing it, these larger aFe ProDryS filters should be the same size as Corsa's DryTech3D filters.

Stay tuned!
