Default Battery maintainer proper hook up

I have seen some comments on this forum a year ago, but I do not remember the details and cannot find the post.
My question is can a battery maintainer be hooked up directly to the positive and negative terminals with all the cables still hooked up? I do not have the unit that plugs directly into the power port.
Thank you

Yes- just did this today actually.

You can either attach the alligator clips, or most battery tenders also come with a "ring terminal" set of cables, so I hooked those up (on the positive side, there is a spare bolt to slip it over and add your own nut; on the negative side there is a bolt that holds the battery cable to the terminal) that way I don't have to remove the plastic battery cover each time.

After that I tucked the tender cable between the plastic battery cover and the weatherproof molding that surrounds the frunk, so it's both secure and also easily accessible.

Just make sure you don't bypass the battery monitor module on the negative cable.

I do not know where that module is on the negative cable, I was going to hook into the negative cable down stream from the battery, but instead I believe am hooked right at the neg cable clamp that goes on the battery post. Am I safe there? I remember something being said last year about the module , you reminded me. So what is the rule , do not hook into the negative cable after the module?

As I remember the module is right there at the battery. You want to connect downstream of of the module so the sensor knows about the current going into the battery.

Edit: I had initially stated that you were correct to connect directly to the negative battery terminal.

Default According to the Service Manual

The following illustrations were created in accordance with what the Service Manual says about how to connect a battery charger. The text from the manual is included in the first illustration.

Looks like that uses an SAE style connector. Most battery tenders have them available. If you have a CTek I think this one would work.

My battery tender has a separate negative and a positive wire with a alligator clip on each end. One of my posts says that and is the reason I hook directly to the battery posts with the cables attached.

Unfortunately with the alligator clips you then have to remove the plastic battery covers every time, which is a pain.

The good news is that for a few bucks you can buy either a generic ring terminal adapter cable, or a generic cigarette adapter cable which uses the "standard" plug that goes into most battery tenders.

Thanks for the ideas, but I will say removing the plastic trim to get at the battery is very easy for me.

CAN you? Yes. SHOULD you? No.

GM specifically warns against doing this because it bypasses the battery monitor circuit and results in the car not knowing the actual level of charge of the battery.
GM says the negative cable from the charger should be connected to a chassis ground, not the negative terminal.

What's wrong with using the socket in the frunk that GM put there specifically for this purpose?

Just moved the neg battery tender lead down stream where the cable bolts up to the metal structure today. thank you.

I have a 2021, but it doesnt matter, just lower the lid till it touches the latch and let it stay unlatched. Covered the car and zipped up the Car bag.
