Default 23 Stingray Engine Oil Weight

I failed to find this subject in search, I apologize if this is a repost.

My 23 Stingray owners manual calls for 0-40wt engine oil but the oil cap specifies 5-50wt. Dealership said they only use 0-40wt.
Anyone know why the fill cap has a different spec on it?

Thx for any help.
Dave

Take it back to the dealer and demand they put a new LT6 under that oil cap.

Sounds like you accidentally received a Z06 oil cap. 0W-40 is correct for the LT2.

That's really interesting, since LT2s are built in Tonawanda, NY and LT6s are built in BGA. I wouldn't think the 5W-50 caps would be sent to Tonawanda at all, unless by mistake (or because there was a shortage of LT2 caps for some strange reason.)

It could be because the engines are shipped "dry" and are filled with oil after installation. A temporary shipping cap may be used during transportation and replaced with the final cap after the engine has been filled with oil. This could be an error proofing step to make sure oil has been installed. I always leave my oil cap off until I have filled the engine with oil when I do an oil change.

If this is the case I wonder what oil is in it....

That is the factory-specified oil for LT2-powered C8s (Stingray/Z51/eRay) but not the LT6 (Z06).

You could be right. I suppose the 5W50 probably wouldn't be a real problem beyond lowering gas mileage. It still thins out at high temps, just not as much as the 40 weight.

I've never forgotten to fill a crankcase. I did once forget to install the drain plug before filling the crankcase. That was rebuilding a motorcycle engine in my apartment bedroom while in college! Oops! Bought a cheap rug to cover the stain on the floor. "Gifted" it to the landlord when I moved out.
