Default Wider Tires?

Hi All, I track my c8. Would like to get a little more lateral grip. Seems like wider tires would be good. Saw this in another post:

"We typically suggest sticking with the original 245/35-19 front and 305/30-20 rear tire sizes, though 315/30-20 or 325/30-20 sized tires are possible on the rear but there are not too many options in these sizes. Michelin, for instance only offers these in their Sport Cup 2. While a 255/35-19 tire on the front is fine and is readily available."

I read somewhere else that you can go up 20 millimeters wider no problem, that's .78 inches...

So i'm thinking about Sport Cup 2
265/35-19 front
325/30-20 rear
on stock rims

Any thoughts?

I think you would be better off getting the stickiest track only tire in stock sizes. Always some issue with going wider.

The best answer is often the least cost effective answer.

since that’s the rabbit hole I went down I’ll offer you my advice:

18x10 front wheels
18x12 rear wheels

295/30/18 fronts
335/30/18 rears

tires are cheaper in the smaller sizes and you can fit a wider tire.

the only downside is that your car won’t like the sizing with TC on.

You can easily fix your TC issues using 345/35/18 rear tires, very nicely matching OEM spread. I use 315/345 combo.. but yes, you'd need aftermarket wheels for these sizes.

With OEM wheels, you can probably go up a bit in width, but you'll quickly hit wheel width and tire height/rubbing limits if you go up top much. 265s are probably going to be the limit for a good setup on OEM wheels..

Just curious, how much clearance is there? How wide of a rim/tire can you run (both front and rear) on a Stingray without rubbing?

You running coilovers or stock suspension? I think what X25 is running is the widest you can go if you get the right offsets, 315/345 front/ rear.

Indeed, OEM shocks are designed for very high stroke for the magna wide to work right: GM uses relatively soft springs for the work needed, and compensate dynamic stiffness with magna ride by increasing its dampening during heavy load sections. If you switch to any coilover with focus on track use, it should significantly limit the body roll over OEM, which is the case for the MCS coilovers I (and a few others) have with much stiffer spring rates. More body control means a lot more dynamic clearance for wider tires..

I've had about zero rubbing with 295/345 setup on 18x10, 18x12 (or 19x12) wheels. When I switched to 18x10.5 front with more aggressive front fitment for 315s, it started rubbing on the brake ducting plastic shield on the control arm, but this only happens when you use the steering close to full lock (parking maneuvers at the paddock).

To be honest, I have overall less rubbing with C8 narrow body than I had on my C7 wide body with similar tires, which is crazy to me. If the wider tire is what you're after, you definitely don't need a Z06/e-ray for the job on C8 platform. Does 315 perform better than 295 up front? Well, that's a different question, and I'm not yet sure about that, but my experience has been with everything else I drove that wider front tires always help with handling, especially on reigning in understeer and improving turn-in; we'll see.

This is the same setup I use. MRR knows the offsets needed for the C8.

For offsets, they're around 18x10 ET42 for fronts, 18x12 (or 19x12) ET50 rears; manufacturers are at our close to these offsets.

For 18x10.5 aggressive front fitment, we did ET50, but next time I'd move it out a bit more and do ET48 to further reduce that interference with brake ducting during parking maneuvers.

Im stepping up to 265 on the front and 325 on the rears with my stock wheels. I have just about used up my Nankangs and will be moving up a size for my next order, plus I will be getting the V2 CRS

I washed out into a curb last weekend at Eagles Canyon Raceway. The curb punctured the sidewall of the front passenger side tire. I was so glad we've been having this conversation, because when I called the local tire store and asked about a new set of front tires, they didn't have anything in the OEM sizes, but based on this thread I told him to search for 255 or 265 mm, and they had a set of Sport Cup 265s in stock. We put them on, and finished out the weekend. They are performing great - a little less understeer and no rubbing. Thanks for all the input!

On another note, I talked to another C8 driver at the track, and he said when he put 325s on the rear he experienced "roll over". He recommended not going over 315mm with the stock rims.

Default 295 tire question

Hi Guys:

For those who have run 295 in front, has anyone run a 295/35/18? I am trying to decide between a 295/35/18 and a 295/30/18 in the new Hoosier Track Attack Pro and would like to confirm there is no rubbing with the taller sidewall. I have Apex 18x10 VS-5RS ET 42 wheels in the front. Thanks.

I have the same wheels and run a 295/30 and 345/30 with no issues. You are going to want -3 degrees of camber though.

I just went with 285/30-18 on 10.5 inch rims for the front and 335/30-18 on 12 in rims for this track season. I paid attention to the front/back diameter stagger to try and get as close to the stock stagger. @X25 ran the rims I now have. There is a challenge getting the rears on the car due to upper control arm interference at full drop. Shouldn’t be an issue once mounted. This setup is for track use only. Looking forward to see how they do. Nankang CRSV2

I went with 305s in the rear too, using the factory wheels, and no rubbing issues so far after about 1,000 miles. Just needed a bit more grip during launches. I had to haul a bunch of tires recently and ended up using montreal truck rental since my daily couldn't fit them all—worked out way better than cramming them in the Vette.

Factory wheel widths are not ideal for those tires…. You really should have a 10” front and 12” rear…..

I would love to see a few pictures of how they fit. I can't fathom there being enough room in the wheel well for a 275/345 section tire.

I also would love to see pics. I don't think it's impossible, given how many on here seem to want offsets to pull their stock tires out wider. But it would prove--once again--why there's nothing to be gained from a C8GS, if the wider tires can already be slapped on a SR if so desired.
