I need assistance with my passenger-side catalytic converter bolt.
While replacing the exhaust last night, I noticed the bottom bolt is bent and the thread is damaged. My concern is whether the bolt is removable. I don't have much clearance to see from behind, but I did notice that a 5 or 6-mm socket might fit at the front. I haven't attempted to remove it yet because I'm worried about breaking the bolt.
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? I have attached some images for reference, Thank you.
It is very possible that it may just be a carriage type bolt that is just pressed in. Generally, if you can feel behind it on the cap it may be flattish. That would indicat it is pressed in. Also on the converter you can barely make out some spline like pattern on the gasket.Try tapping it lightly to get a feel for it. Listen too as that could give you and indication how it is in there.
Good luck.
Put some rust penetrant on it and let it set, it is a stud it should turn out with a little effort. Dealership should have a replacement, or be able to order it. I would carefully try and run a metric die to clean up the threads. (M8 x 1.25 is my guess)
